About the Item
Ellen Hackl Fagan makes her paintings by pouring paint around the forms of commonplace, mass-produced objects placed on wet sheets of paper or panels – little fruit cartons, fragments of floor tile, paper towels, bubble wrap - letting the paint perform autonomously as it reacts to the objects. Ghostly traces of forms and patterns floating in a universe of saturated color, gives her work an elegiac air. Fagan says: “I call this ‘blind’ painting. For me, it's the "not knowing" that moves me forward”.
Throughout her career, Fagan has had over 30 solo exhibitions. She exhibits her artwork throughout the greater New York metropolitan area and Northeast, and has works included in permanent public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. Currently, her work has been the full color feature in print in Post Road Vol. No. 37 Winter issue 2021. She has been the subject of multiple interviews both on the air and online including WBYX’s radio program out of Yale University, and the New York Public Library’s Artist Interview series. Known widely for her generosity in offering artists opportunities, Fagan is also a fluent and experienced curator; as creator and director of ODETTA , she has curated and produced over 80 exhibitions showcasing well over 250 artists, many are featured on 1stdibs. Recently the pandemic inspired her to pivot to a new exhibition paradigm of online curatorial practices as founder of ODETTA Digital on the Shim Art Network, and ODETTA Petite, offering services enabling artists to better navigate social media tools and to develop their own curatorial voices and gallery spaces, both virtually and in physical. Fagan maintains her studio and curatorial practice in New York City, Connecticut, and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ellen Hackl Fagan
Ellen Hackl Fagan builds connections between color and sound using installations, interactive games, and collaborative projects that combine color-and-texture saturated paintings with music and digital technologies. Each installation invites viewers an opportunity to explore synaesthesia for themselves.

Fagan is the inventor of the Reverse Color Organ and the ColorSoundGrammar Game, two projects that enable viewers to interact aurally with color. In collaboration with web architect Joshie Fishbein, the Reverse Color Organ is a web app, downloadable to a smartphone, thus placing this synaesthetic tool into peoples’ hands to be used, not only to expand the language of color, but also as a crowd-sourced musical instrument.
Fagan exhibits her work extensively throughout New England and New York City. In 2014 she expanded her independent curatorial practice into a full-time business and is now the owner of ODETTA Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn. There, she maintains her painting studio and is an active member of this vibrant arts community.

Bay Area artist and art educator Michael Pauker was born in New York in 1957 and knew he wanted to be an artist from the age of 15. He earned a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at SUNY Purchase in his native state of New York. In 1989 he went on to earn an M.F.A at Mills College in Oakland and was awarded the City of Oakland Artist Fellowship in Painting. He has been a Bay Area resident since 1988. His work has been exhibited widely across the U.S., as well as in Japan and Costa Rica, and is included in the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
