About the Item

Enoc Perez (b. 1967) was born in San Juan and currently resides in Manhattan. The son of an art critic, Perez was versed in art history from a young age. Recurring themes in his art are the nude body, the tropical, natural beauty of his native Puerto Rico, and the gleaming, modernist architecture of Midtown Manhattan, where the artist has resided since 1997. Interested in the optimism of city planning in the middle decades of the last century, Perez aligns himself with the architects of the 1950s and 1960s, stating "I love painting, and I believe in painting, and I share that with these architects who believed in utopia.” Perez began his series of hybrid painting-print canvases with appropriated imagery from paintings by Picasso in 2013, explaining "I always wanted a Picasso, so I made one for my house three or four years ago. Now that I’m 45, I feel like I can go there." Perez follows in the tradition of other acclaimed artists who have created works based on appropriated Picasso imagery, such as Roy Lichtenstein and Richard Prince. Perez creates his collages on the iPad 'Brushes' app, also used by David Hockney in his series of iPad 'drawings.' Regarding his practice, Perez aligns himself with another acclaimed and influential artist: "You have to embrace the technology. Basquiat was out there using color Xerox before anyone else was using it. That's just part of it."
