In Eric Blum’s mostly monochromatic paintings, ink permeates silk in soft gradients, which abruptly meet the defined edges of his revisions. Overlays of varying opacities form a fragmented patchwork of idiosyncratic shapes that hint at recognition. They are neither entirely legible nor genuinely abstract, reflecting his ongoing interest in the unreliability of perception.
In an effort to reduce the friction of conscious decision-making, Blum begins each painting with a blind selection; that is, an initial drawing loosely rendered from an arbitrarily chosen source, confining all further transformations to within its framework. The limited set of compositional elements are then rotated, excavated, flipped, stripped, and placed elsewhere — ultimately reshuffling into a kind of visual anagram. It’s as reductive as it is additive. Blum’s paintings accommodate the inevitable tensions of opposing inclinations: an exhibitionist’s flirtation with too much and a minimalist’s compulsion for order and calm.
Eric Blum is a recipient of two grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, as well as one from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His work has been featured in shows at the Albright-Knox Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Knoxville Art Museum, and The Contemporary Art Center of Cincinnati, among other institutions. Blum studied photography at UCLA, and currently lives and works in New York City and Los Angeles.

Eric Blum was educated at UCLA, St Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. Blum’s layered arrangements of ink-washed, wax-infused silk are rooted in modern painting techniques, yet activated by the experimental manipulation of his media. While initially drawing inspiration from the world around him, he dives into his work blindly, putting his materials through a process of layering, rotating, covering and uncovering, until he settles the elements into a visual anagram; no longer resembling his preconception. The ambiguity of Blum’s references and the elusiveness of his narrative are beguiling. Its parts don’t always go together, and when viewed anew it becomes something other than itself. Creating work that is more desirable, poetic or preposterous than when it began.

"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment.
A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain."
