About

Esther Podemski's oil paintings on cigar box lids began as a response to a small show of anonymous Tantric paintings exhibited in 2005 at the library of the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Beaux-Arts. This idea, that a painting could be an object for contemplation, initiated this new series of works. Podemski was inspired by monks who paint on found disposable surfaces and carry their art from place to place. Having saved cigar boxes for many years, the artist found a new use for these found objects. The scale and worn fugitive material of the cigar box lids provide the perfect platform for her exploration of a single meditative form and the emotive power of color. Esther Podemski is a filmmaker and visual artist whose works have been exhibited in galleries, film festivals and academic venues. As a painter, she has exhibited nationally and internationally and her work is included in private and public collections. She has exhibited paintings and drawings at the Jersey City Museum, The Portland Art Museum and The Oregon Jewish Museum as well as galleries in Portland Oregon and New York. Recent exhibitions include 5 Days in July; a two-screen installation that revisits the Newark riots of 1967. This installation was exhibited at numerous museums, galleries and colleges including The Tisch School of Art at NYU, The Birmingham Civil Rights Museum and The Sate Museum in Trenton New Jersey. It won the Director’s Choice award at the Black Maria Film Festival and the Jury award for the best short at The Langston Hughes African American Film Festival. Her grants include the New York State Council on the Arts, The Jerome Foundation, The Soros Foundation, The Memorial Foundation For Jewish Culture, the Yaddo Residency and Ucross Residency programs. She has taught fine arts graduate and undergraduate courses at Parsons School of Design in New York, Pacific Northwest College of Art, and Sarah Lawrence College.
