About the Item
Ezio Martinelli (American, 1913 - 1981) was a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and teacher associated with the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. Born in West Hoboken, New Jersey, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and the National Academy of Design in New York, studying under both classical painters and abstractionists. Martinelli worked with Atelier 17 and taught at multiple institutions including Sarah Lawrence College, Parsons School of Design, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He received Guggenheim and Tiffany fellowships, and his work is in the Whitney, Guggenheim, and Art Institute of Chicago collections. This exhibit features a large oil on canvas by Martinelli, evoking architecture and hidden figures.
