About the Item

This contemporary painting by Fiona Ackerman references moonlight. The bold artistic vision of Vancouver painter Fiona Ackerman is often inspired by nature. This painting, entitled ‘Moonlight’, is a carefully collaged composition, its central form a lyrical swath of white that flows down the center of the canvas. Layers of shapes, expressive lines, shadowy images and textured features provide the backdrop. Graffiti-like black markings—a signature of Ackerman’s work add intriguing detail and contrast. The colour palette is an eclectic mix of deep green, red, pale pink, cement gray and black. “I’m often asked what kind of painter I am. Figurative, abstract, small, large, digital, botanical, surrealist, mural... I just say yes to all of it.” Fiona Ackerman Fiona Ackerman was born in Ottawa in 1978. She studied painting at Concordia University and completed a BFA at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2002. She has held more than 20 solo exhibitions internationally. Fiona’s studio practice extends beyond painting to include several large-scale murals, videos, and other public art projects. In her free time, she writes and records music and videos, often working with other musicians. She currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC.

Deborah Dancy "State of Being 20" - Abstract Acrylic Painting on Paper
By Deborah Dancy
Located in New York, NY
Deborah Dancy State of Being 20, 2021 acrylic on paper 38 x 30 in. (dan041) This original contemporary abstract work on paper by Deborah Dancy is comprised of black, white, and grey paint, in her signature built up/re-built space that as she says, "operate in a realm in which beauty and tension simultaneously exist without explanation or narrative." Deborah Dancy is an abstract artist. Her paintings and drawings are sensuous provocations beset with marks that guide, then abruptly collide into confrontational slabs of color. There is an atmosphere of complex but urgent tension in her work, as she builds tangential linear demarcations, and abutting shapes, that provoke, entice and disrupt; -taking us everywhere and nowhere. From densely painted forms to more minimally declared images, Dancy’s work operates in the recognition that meanderings, intentional and accidental declarations are best when the beautiful and the disconcerting exist simultaneously. Deborah Dancy was born in Bessemer, Alabama and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She earned BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MS and an MFA from Illinois State University. She is the recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Yaddo Fellow, and a National Endowment of the Arts NEFA award. Her work is in many collections including The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Birmingham Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum and The Detroit Institute of Art.
