François Benoit Lison
Lointain

About the Item

François Benoit Lison (1968 - ) "Lointain" Oil on canvas 100 x 81 cm 2022 Born in Granville, France, on April 14, 1968, François Benoît-Lison began with a figurative approach, which gradually evolved into abstraction, first lyrical, then more contrasting, where black reigns supreme. Black is a sacred color, sometimes dark, sometimes dazzling, without limits, it can be dominant or gentle. After acrylics and oils, bituminous pastes and inks opened another door, that of the abstract, much more profound and contemporary, with the possibility of working these materials in many aspects and forms. Since the 1980s, the artist has been offering us works imbued with research, reflection and philosophy, charged with a strong, raw message, highlighting his thoughts and leaving an indelible imprint. Abstraction is his adventure, his freedom, his struggle, his dreams, his rage, his solitude. Works by Jackson Pollock, Caravaggio, Egon Schiele, Pierre Soulages and André Marfaing are major references for the artist. In September 2022, Galerie Sarto is proud to release the first catalog raisonné, with over 200 pages covering the artist’s career from 1998 to 2021 (nearly 850 works referenced). His book is available from the gallery on request.

In the middle of the road
By Dana Frankfort
Located in Houston, TX
Dana Frankfort In the middle of the road, 2017 oil on canvas over panel 48 x 48 x 1.75 inches For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form. The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...
