This is one of a series we have posted on 1stDibs. The first got more clicks and saves on its first day than any of the many hundreds of artworks we have ever posted. Here's a recent message from a 1stDibs buyer of a painting in this series, a seasoned collector:
"Love your work. We collect colorists like Wolf Kahn and Jennifer Bartlett, whom I commissioned a piece from that is in the entrance of Mayo Clinic. We are old fans of Morris Louis and we see a Cy Twombly reminiscence in your work, but in a totally new original and fresh perspective in your work. We decided this morning that we would move/give away other work to add your to our collection if it is right for you. Thanks for sharing your talents. "
Here's the Artist's Statement:
"I began this series after being inspired by a passage of pastel in a painting that was very different from this, and playing around with altering the quality of the line by drawing more sharply or broadly, smearing, and mixing with water and acrylic. The colors are bright and tend towards the decorative, but the more industrial and acid colors keep these pictures from being too 'pretty.' There are also the drips and roughness of the strokes to militate against the merely decorative. Some of the circular forms are fading, others are coming forward, depending both on color, lightness and sharpness of articulation. So there is a lot of push-pull tension here. You can't make this kind of painting without somehow referencing Cy Twombly, either directly or through his influence on others. But there's also Ida Kohlmeyer, the most famous modernist painter from New Orleans. I find her "heiroglyphs" a little too tight and contrived for my taste, but she was great with color which brought verve to the random forms she worked with in her later and most popular paintings."
(On prior series by the artist): “These paintings are a refreshing departure from the current abstract art world’s seemingly endless parade of fields of color with scribbles providing form, a style that is easily mimicked and has become a sort of “safe,” accessible go-to. There are confident decisions in these paintings appearing as commitments of strongly delineated forms and unexpected collisions of color that give the work a visceral, confident and playful soul, increasingly missing from contemporary expressionist abstraction. They are the paintings of a real painter rather than a decorative artist.”

G. Campbell Lyman
G. Campbell Lyman is a prolific collector of works by lesser heralded artists and an accomplished abstract painter in his own right. Lyman’s own abstract paintings and watercolors comprise repeating patterns of irregular circles, rectangles, whorls and cellular forms painted with thick brushstrokes in vivacious hues.
Lyman grew up in New Orleans, where he started collecting and making his art as a teenager. When he was around 30 years old, he began traveling to discover and sell undervalued art, living in various places in the United States and Europe.
Eventually, he returned to New Orleans and opened Guy Lyman Fine Art on the city’s famous Magazine Street. He operated the gallery for several years before moving his business entirely online in the late 2010s. Lyman divides his inventory into four sections: 19th- and early 20th-century art, modern and contemporary art, New Orleans and Louisiana art, and finally, his own creations.
Lyman cites "painterly" painters like Robert Rauschenberg, Sean Scully, Cy Twombly and Julian Schnabel — as well as movements such as Pop art and Abstract Expressionism — as having influenced his work. He is less concerned about the forms on the canvas and more about the paint’s texture, color and line, as well as the negative space around it. He appreciates and creates art that shows the presence of the artist's hand.
Lyman's work is held in art collections from California and Aspen to London and Beirut. He strives to keep his prices affordable for a broader demographic of collectors.

So I decided to change both the forms and the strokes, and lose a lot of the color, and do something different for awhile. I stayed with simple forms as in general I am much more interested in surface and color anyway. With this painting, after I had finished the central piece, I felt it lacked gravitas due mostly to size, and so I decided to affix the canvas to an underlying canvas painted in a very flat black color, with texture to it (I actually used house paint for this, which is perfect for what I wanted). So the painting is actually a canvas attached to another, and has three-dimensionality to it. You can see in the close-ups the "strokiness" I was after. I think this painting has a sort of Rothko-ish, iconic quality to it, but without the gravitas."
