Inspired contemplative, warm cream, bronze abstract Impressionist diptych painting created in homage to the composer Rachmaninov, Sublime 'Rachmaninov “Letter to Sergei" is comprised of a rich range of cream tones with bronze and touches color - plumb-burgundy to gold. The late-career established artist paints thinly layered oil on linen over extended periods (from months to years) to complete a single work of art. Taking cues from nature’s extraordinary visual offerings — specifically, the play of light as it touches upon water and earth — Chase Bien's nature-inspired works bridge realism and abstraction, and convey a thin veneer of the of human spirit. Complex, rich, and slow in the making, the paintings, with their serene simplicity, are intended to be viewed and enjoyed over time. Late career artist Gail Chase Bien's work is included in prominent and prestigious collections worldwide.
72 x 192 inches when hung side by side, the diptych (in two parts) canvases are each 6 x 8 feet.. Framing is not required. Edges of the painting are also painted. A stunning work of art viewed up close as well as at a distance. Condition is excellent. Artist signed, dated and titled verso. Highly collectable new painting created over 18 months and finished in 2019.

Gail Chase-Bien
Gail Chase-Bien has a way of creating boundless worlds within the edges of the canvas. Her nature-inspired abstract, landscape and figurative paintings blur the distinction between background and foreground, inviting the viewer’s imagination to structure the piece. She brings softness, subtlety and suggestion to the edgy world of contemporary art.
Chase-Bien was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1946. She attended the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, receiving a bachelor’s of fine art in 1977 and a master’s of fine art in 1980. She held her first solo exhibition at Highlight Gallery in Mendocino in 1985 and continued to show steadily throughout California during the rest of the ’80s and ’90s.
Chase-Bien’s collection of work is a tribute to nature and the play of light upon the colors of the landscape. At the same time, her paintings are a meditation upon the human spirit and an invitation for introspection. Each piece takes her anywhere from a few months to years to make using oil paints on linen.
Chase-Bien currently lives and works in Napa County. Her ethereal paintings are held in many private collections and are exhibited at galleries and museums across California and beyond.
