Georges Terzian 1939-2021 French La guitare au domino Signed “G.TERZIAN” (lower right); signed, titled and dated “GEORGES TERZIAN LA GUITARE AU DOMINO 2012” (en verso) Oil on canvas Visually stimulating and skillfully executed, this original painting entitled La guitare au domino was created by French artist Georges Terzian. Reminiscent of the works of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the artist’s composition reflects the core tenants of the Cubist movement. Abounding with pattern and texture, the viewer can recognize several objects in the still life despite its fragmentation and abstraction: a guitar, a domino, sheet music and a wine glass. Further livened by Terzian’s bold palette, La guitare au domino exudes a trademark dynamism and vitality that marks the artist’s finest works. Born to parents of Armenian origin mere months before the outset of the Second World War, Georges Terzian enrolled in L'École de Beaux-Arts of Marseille at the young age of 14, where he began his formal training in drawing and painting. The young artist quickly became immersed in creative circles around Marseille but was forced to put his artistic pursuits on hold for the duration of the Algerian War. Finally settling in Paris in the 1960s, he took up his passion once more, painting landscapes in an impressionistic style reminiscent of Paul Cézanne. The artist’s compositions matured over the following two decades. He developed a highly individual post-Cubist style as he began to explore color and geometric abstraction, looking back to the groundbreaking work of artists like Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Terzian's work has achieved wider international acclaim following a highly successful solo exhibition at Galerie Giovanni in Paris, and his dynamic artworks reside in prestigious private collections worldwide. Notes : Georges Terzian est né à Marseille le 8 mars 1939. D'origine arménienne, sa famille vivait initialement en Russie mais s'est installée en France avant sa naissance. Terzian a commencé à dessiner et à peindre lorsqu'il était très jeune. À quatorze ans, ses parents l'inscrivent à l'École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille. Il y étudie pendant un an mais quitte l'école avant d'avoir terminé ses études, bien qu'il continue à peindre dans son atelier de Sainte-Mitre, près de Marseille. Il a également étudié la musique à Paris avec Jean Lumière, qui a été le tuteur de nombreux musiciens talentueux émergeant à Paris à cette époque. Inspirés par les post-impressionnistes, les premiers tableaux de Georges Terzian se concentrent sur les paysages de Provence. Travaillant à l'huile et à la gouache, il a expérimenté la technique impressionniste de la peinture "en plein air" dans les environs de sa maison familiale. À cette époque, il est particulièrement impressionné par les compositions de formes simples et de plans de couleurs de Cézanne, peintes au début du siècle. Georges Terzian s'est installé à Paris dans les années 1960. Peignant de manière prolifique, le développement de l'artiste s'est constamment articulé autour du mouvement cubiste, avec une attention particulière pour Braque et Picasso. En étudiant les œuvres de ces maîtres cubistes, Terzian a développé son propre type de post-cubisme. Se concentrant presque entièrement sur les natures mortes, il a expérimenté la formation de différents objets, travaillant principalement à l'huile. Terzian a commencé à considérer ses sujets comme une symphonie de couleurs et de formes et a cherché à exprimer ce dynamisme global dans chacune de ses peintures. Ayant participé à de nombreuses expositions personnelles à Paris, ses œuvres ont été acquises par de nombreux collectionneurs publics et privés en France et à l'étranger. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque before honing his personal and innovative style. Entitled Aoum II, the painting stands apart for its daring color palette and crisp composition. Painted in 1944, Aoum II embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. Only two years prior to its creation, Herbin developed his “alphabet plastique,” a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, one does not need to perfectly understand his principles to feel Aoum II's magnetism. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily fragmented triangles and circles — are rendered in bold pinks, blues and yellows on a deep black background. His tiered application of color creates a natural three-register visual effect as if to tell a story from the apex of the form to its denouement. Auguste Herbin began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille before moving to Paris in 1901. In the early years of his career, he experimented with a variety of styles, exhibiting Post-Impressionistic works at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906 and Fauvist paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1907.
