Gian Berto Vanni
Rising Sun

2009

About

Gian Berto Vanni is best known for his vibrant and intellectual paintings where often abstraction fades into figurative and vice versa. His syntax is the result of a comprehensive variety of elements referencing from mythology to biology, from literature to his extensive traveling around the world. This artwork subtly threads between a figurative and an abstract imagery. The title guides the viewer to identify the rising sphere in the center as a raising sun. The gold leaf all around creates a glittering and reflective surface alluding to the golden morning clouds of the Indonesian landscapes so often seen by Vanni while traveling. Gian Berto Vanni was born in Rome. He studied with Vordemberge-Gildewart in Holland and color theory with Joseph Albers at Yale University in New Haven. He has been actively involved in the Italian Art scene of the 60s, moving to New York City at the end of the 70s. He has been teaching color theory at Cooper Union School of Art in NYC for 30 years. He currently lives and works in New York and Greece. His works have been shown in galleries in the United States, Europe and Japan.
