This large contemporary abstract oil painting is subtly metallic, and shines in the light. Delicate silver lines dance across painterly washes of yellow and red.
"In my paintings, I use metallic pigments, like aluminum and graphite. I also use mica particles mixed with my colors to affect a kinetic quality of illusory motion depending from which angle the work is seen. I try to find out what the painting wants from me. I sometimes have the distinct feeling that I feed the canvas with color and form, and it either accepts my choice or it rejects it. So I flounder between trial and error until I make the right decision. I am always waiting for that instant in which the painting snaps into focus. I depend most of all on this gut feeling. Sometimes, the painting may respond favorably to one of my arbitrary choices, but I can’t agree just yet and I try to resist its choice. A battle begins. I always loose in the end. Only when I let go of my preconceptions and just follow, can I truly arrive at something new and surprising. I know this must sound very strange, but this is the relationship I have with my work. It needs me to bring it to life and I need it to keep me living, physically and spiritually."

This original contemporary abstract painting by Deborah Dancy is comprised of hues of light pink, lime green, grey, and maroon in her signature built up/re-built space that as she says, "operate in a realm in which beauty and tension simultaneously exist without explanation or narrative."
Deborah Dancy is an abstract artist. Her paintings and drawings are sensuous provocations beset with marks that guide, then abruptly collide into confrontational slabs of color. There is an atmosphere of complex but urgent tension in her work, as she builds tangential linear demarcations, and abutting shapes, that provoke, entice and disrupt; -taking us everywhere and nowhere. From densely painted forms to more minimally declared images, Dancy’s work operates in the recognition that meanderings, intentional and accidental declarations are best when the beautiful and the disconcerting exist simultaneously.
Dancy was born in Bessemer, Alabama and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She earned BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MS and an MFA from Illinois State University. She is the recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Yaddo Fellow, and a National Endowment of the Arts NEFA award. Her work is in many collections including The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Birmingham Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum and The Detroit Institute of Art.
