About the Item
Mid-century design for a sculpture, in acrylic, attributed to French artist and sculptor Guy Benoist. The design is not signed but was bought with other signed designs by the artist. It is marked 'epreuve d'artiste 1976' bottom right in pencil.
Guy Benoist (born 1931) revealed his talent as an artist early on in his childhood (around the age of twelve) when he began drawing.
He studied at the Grenoble School of Art as well as in Brussels and Paris.
Benoist was a sculptor for forty years and his style could be described as contemporary surrealist. He was taught by the sculptor César for four years and was highly influenced by Giacometti and Zakine. He worked in metal ( steel and bronze ) and stone, in particular marble. His style is very personal often using a host of curves and intertwining figures/shapes in his creations. It is difficult to see at times the fine distinction between the abstract and figurative.
Guy Benoist set up his studio in Vence on the French Riviera. One of his sculptures can be found in Vence. He often exhibited in this region of France but also in Paris, Rome, London, New-York, Brussels and Germany. In Paris his works were exhibited in the 'Galerie Drouant'.
He has also often figured in the national press.
