About the Item

Original abstract oil on canvas painting by Harvey Litvack (1930-2021) from 1953 painted in vibrant colors of orange, red, green, blue, and black. Signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner. Presented in a custom frame measuring 25 ½ x 37 ½ inches. Image sight size is 23 ¼ x 35 ½ inches. Expedited and international shipping is available - please contact us for a quote. About the artist: Harvey Kark Litvack was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on October 27, 1930. His parents, Abraham Litvack and Rose (Kark), owned a furniture business in the city for a number of years. He graduated from Centennial High School in Pueblo in 1948 and went on to study at the University of Colorado-Boulder (CU) from which he graduated with a BA and MFA in art. His Master’s thesis, Conditions and Trends of Art Education Today (1954), was approved by four Colorado artists on the university art faculty committee: Lynn Wolfe, Charles Annan, Ann E. Jones and F.C. Trucksess. While a student at CU, the Brooklyn Museum purchased Litvack’s etching, Good Morning, in 1952 for its permanent collection. Following graduation from CU Litvack served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He was stationed in France that enabled him to visit all of that country’s great museums. After his discharge he taught art for over forty-six years, forty of which were spent as art teacher at Turlock High School in Modesto, California. He and Andrew LaMance, his long-time companion of more than fifty-one years, shared an intense interest in travel. They enjoyed trips to over sixty countries that covered every continent except Antarctica. Litvack passed away peacefully in Modesto, California, on October 28, 2021, having celebrated his ninety-first birthday the previous day. Several of Litvack’s paintings were included in the 100th anniversary exhibition celebrating the Broadmoor Art Academy and its legacy 1919-1970 at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in 2019 and reproduced in the accompanying catalog. He also is listed in the book, Colorado Abstract: Paintings and Sculpture, published in 2009. He is represented in the permanent collection of the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Arts in Denver, Colorado, as well as in private collections. ©Stan Cuba for David Cook Galleries
