About the Item
VOID is a multilayered composition created with paper, painted tyvek and silkscreen cut-outs. The panel was initially created as part of the “Kudzu Season” series, exhibited in the Channel to Channel Gallery in April 2021. The Kudzu plant, also called Japanese arrowroot, is a perennial vine, native to Asia and considered an invasive species in the United States. Kudzu’s rapid growth caused devastating environmental consequences in the region of Southern United States.
The silhouettes of the vine’s trifoliate leaves have been layered on the outer edges, creating an ornate, circular frame and leading us further into the compositional halo. The tyvek and silkscreen cut-outs form an optical illusion of a three-dimensional space, heightened by the descending color scheme. Starting from bright shades of the decorative foliage darkening towards the magenta oculus, the painting resembles an abstract paraphrase of rococo “trompe l’oeil” ceilings.

CHROMASEEDS - Framed Mixed Media Painting of 3 Gaillardia w/ Blooms Falling
By Heather Hartman
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
CHROMASEEDS is a multilayered composition created with paper and tyvek cut-outs painted with oil, acrylic, and gouache, sealed with polyester mesh layers. The plants represented in the piece are Gaillardia flowers, commonly known as blanket flowers, native to North America and often bred for their decorative, ornamental shape. In her creative process, Hartman anthropomorphizes the flowers, paying attention to their dance-like growth movement. Here, their shadows dance in the prismatic light of the rainbow, while the wind catches their seeds, cultivating the garden. The vibrant, rainbow light was achieved by painting a prismatic shape on tyvec and black paper, creating a reverse silhouette...
