Heidi Thompson
Breathing Mystery

2017

About

Heidi Thompson is known for her poetic canvases where color and light create abstractions reminiscent of nature and natural phenomena. Drippings of colors that up-close could be compared to Jackson Pollock's frantic painting technique are instead the foundation for creating intense color fields of the utmost serenity. Whether the result is one unique color field or the juxtaposition of different shades and tonality, all of Thompson's artworks share a unique contemplative and meditative quality. Thompson uses a unique patina painting technique which involves adding and subtracting layers of colour to create a multi-layer organic composition. Her paintings celebrate the transient and changing nature of all things. Breathing Mystery celebrates one of Thompson's work most fascinating characteristic, a capacity to capture a mysterious golden light that seems to live within the canvas. It brings a unique and almost mythological aspect to her work. “What I dream of is an art of balance, purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter – a soothing calming influence on the mind rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” – Henri Matisse Thompson writes: " Inspired by Matisse’s artistic quest, I paint images that illuminate, soothe and vitalize the human spirit. I endeavor to capture moments of beauty – beauty around me; beauty within me. How do I express unseen, fleeting beauty within? Instead of painting trees, mountains, clouds and sunsets, I paint abstractions using nature’s visual elements - color, light, movement and space. My work may resemble a “natural” scene like a sunset, landscape, or rock patina; however the image is wholly abstract. What matters is the emotion it elicits. I want to evoke the feeling you get while walking through a deep wood, gazing at a glorious sunset or delighting in the sparkle of sunlight. I believe paintings can mirror our inner nature letting us to see and feel our mysterious, intangible world within." Heidi Thompson was born in Canada. In 1974, she moved to Europe to study at the University of Art & Design Zürich. After earning a Swiss Diploma for Photography she apprenticed with German painter Oskar Koller. Thereafter, Thompson attended the Nürnberg Art Academy followed by one year of painting at the Hungarian University for Art, Budapest. In 1982, she returned to Coldstream, B.C. and worked as a publisher, photographer, teacher and painter. Currently, Heidi Thompson paints full time and exhibits in the USA, Europe and Canada.
