Mexican artist Heny Steinberg’s abstract artworks invite us to travel from the map to the localized event. She is suggesting that the spatial memory guidelines residing in the relationship between a two-dimensional space existing in a vacuum and the human territories we inhabit.
This 35 inch square artwork is wired and ready to hang. Steinberg uses several layers of acrylic paint, balancing her artwork between abstraction and geometric outlines. Heny Steinberg’s unique artworks are constructed by displacement over a lattice or a diagram by way of fragmentation, union, and re-fragmentation. The shapes that inhabit this multi-dimensional space possess visual values that transcend their actual representation. Her work process becomes a means through which elements that have previously been unnoticed are discovered. Through their decontextualization, the elements acquire new meaning, giving rise to a dialogue between the material and the visual. The only obstacle is the physical limits of the canvas.
Steinberg’s imagination discovers, within the territories, the link between abundance and vacuum, the complex and diverse strategies imagined pursuing the cultural appropriation of space. Heny Steinberg
Heny Steinberg was born in Mexico City in 1955 and received a degree in graphic design from the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature in Mexico City. Heny Steinberg’s unique artworks are constructed by displacement over a lattice or a diagram by way of fragmentation, union, and re-fragmentation. The shapes that inhabit this multi-dimensional space possess visual values that transcend their actual representation. Her work process becomes a means by which elements that have previously been unnoticed are discovered. Through their de-contextualisation, elements acquire new meaning, giving rise to a dialogue between the material and the viewer. About the Artist: Juliette Steele, an American artist, was an accomplished printmaker, painter and teacher. Steele was part of the Geometric Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism movements. Her peers included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Clyfford Still.
Steele was born in 1909 in Union City, New Jersey. In the late 1920s, she moved to New York to study art and fashion design at the Traphagen School of Design. A decade later, she moved to San Francisco with husband Edward Steele, and earned a Bachelor of Art degree from San Francisco State College.
In the 1940s, Steele found inspiration from the new city, and produced a series of lithographs depicting San Francisco landmarks. At the same time, she earned a Master of Fine Arts from Stanford University, and continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
