Acrilico e tecnica mista su tela. Firmato e datato in basso al centro. Hsiao Chin, artista di origine taiwanese ma che ha vissuto e lavorato a lungo a Milano, ha concepito l'arte come un percorso di crescita e conoscenza, un viaggio spirituale attraverso il tempo e lo spazio, che va al di là di qualsiasi limite geografico e culturale. Nelle sue opere le pratiche spirituali dell'Oriente si coniugano perfettamente con le sperimentazioni artistiche dell'Occidente, da lui conosciute per i lunghi soggiorni in diversi paesi del mondo. Se da un lato i suoi dipinti possono far pensare a una pagina scritta in cui l'artista fa appello alla simbologia orientale, realizzando un messaggio fatto di segni sottili, quasi ideogrammi, cui si alternano forme geometriche evocatrici di significati atavici e condivisi (cerchi, quadrati, spirali…); dall'altro le audaci scelte cromatiche, cariche di energia, e le pennellate, talvolta frenetiche e sfavillanti, talaltra più liquide e calibrate, appaiono “occidentali”. Di sè l'artista ha detto: “Oggi la questione se la mia arte sia cinese o globale non è più importante per me. Cerco di andare oltre questi confini, con l'intento di creare nuove opere che non siano condizionate da tecniche e idee.” (Hsiao Chin, 2016). L'opera qui presentata, datata 1962, appartiene al periodo trascorso da Hsiao Chin in Europa prima e a New York poi, in cui entra in contatto con tutte le nuove correnti dell'astrattismo, che determinano nella sua pittura “un nuovo corso”, in cui appare evidente l'avvicinamento al minimalismo americano e alla pittura hard edge (pittura dai "contrasti netti", ovvero stile pittorico caratterizzato da bruschi e netti contrasti tra diverse aree di colore, che possono essere semplici forme geometriche compiute o linee rette. Il colore di ogni area è prevalentemente omogeneo e monocromo) . L'opera è presentata in cornice. L'opera proviene da una collezione privata milanese, che documenta i contatti diretti della famiglia con l'artista attraverso una serie di immagini fotografiche in sua compagnia (allegate copie).
