Hsiao Chin, an artist of Taiwanese origin but who has lived and worked for a long time in Milan, conceived of art as a path of growth and knowledge, a spiritual journey through time and space that transcends all geographical and cultural boundaries.
In his works, the spiritual practices of the East are perfectly combined with the artistic experiments of the West, which he knew from his long stays in different countries of the world.
While his paintings may bring to mind a written page in which the artist appeals to Eastern symbology, realizing a message made of subtle, almost ideogram-like signs, alternating with geometric shapes evocative of atavistic and shared meanings (circles, squares, spirals...); on the other hand, the bold color choices, charged with energy, and the brushstrokes, sometimes frenetic and sparkling, sometimes more liquid and calibrated, appear "Western."
Of himself, the artist said, "Today the question of whether my art is Chinese or global is no longer important to me. I try to go beyond these boundaries, with the intention of creating new works that are not conditioned by techniques and ideas." (Hsiao Chin, 2016).
The work presented here, dated 1962, belongs to the period Hsiao Chin spent first in Europe and then in New York, in which comes into contact with all the new currents of abstractionism, which determine in his painting "a new course," in which the approach to American minimalism and hard edge painting (painting with "sharp contrasts," i.e painting style characterized by sharp, sharp contrasts between different areas of color, which may be simple accomplished geometric shapes or straight lines. The color of each area is mainly homogeneous and monochrome) .

The work comes from a private collection in Milan, which documents the family's direct contacts with the artist through a series of photographic images in his company (copies attached).

Hsiao Chin
Hsiao Chin greatly influenced the development of abstract painting in China. He was born in Shanghai in 1935. After the first art studies, in 1956, he took part in the founding of the Ton-Fan group, the first Chinese abstract painting movement. In 1957, at the Mataró Fine Arts Museum, near Barcelona, he held his first solo show and a group exhibition dedicated to the Ton-Fan group. At the end of the fifties, his reflection on Taoist philosophy began. In 1961, together with Antonio Calderara, he founded the Punto movement. His artistic research combines elements of oriental culture and spirituality with the profound knowledge of western artistic modernity. Since his first solo show at the Mataró Fine Arts Museum, Chin has held more than 120 solo shows and has participated in many group exhibitions throughout Europe, Taiwan and in the United States.
