About the Item
In her painting "Portrait (Bird)," late artist Jackie Saccoccio creates an index of the act of painting, as gestural brushstrokes layered beneath the controlled chaos of paint driplines. By changing the orientation of the canvas while she is painting, the network of drips appears to defy gravity, in direct rebellion to the process by which they were made. Saccoccio combined different varnishes and mica into the paint, rendering an ever-shifting appearance depending on where the viewer stands in relation to the work. The result of this combination of process and medium is the impression that the painting is almost hovering in space like a cloud, conveying the idea of impermanence.
