About the Item

Contrapuntal Painting (3/25) is a unique acrylic on canvas, gloss finish painting by contemporary artist James Lumsden, dimensions are 40 × 35 cm (15.7 × 13.7 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This piece is divided horizontally, showcasing a vivid fiery red in the upper section and a deep, midnight blue below. The colors are highly contrasting yet possess a translucent, luminous quality. By borrowing a title from the world of music for this series, the artist establishes a deliberate analogy: “These paintings are not about music, but they aspire to its condition. I hope viewers will respond to them as they would to a musical composition — beyond words, through feeling. As with music, I want the work to stir an emotional resonance.” James Lumsden’s abstract paintings are meditations on light, colour, and depth. His process involves the patient superimposition of numerous thin layers of acrylic paint and gel gloss, each manipulated with specific tools to reveal or obscure traces and gestures. Through this methodical layering, the artist creates an illusion of inner luminosity and depth, inviting the viewer into a universe that is both mysterious and compelling. The marks of colour, while visible on the surface, seem to emanate from within the canvas — a dynamic that Lumsden describes as “an act of fixed movement.” Translucent, vibrant hues intersect and merge, forming delicate yet assertive harmonies of contrast. This painterly technique, balancing chance with control, transforms the material surface into a poetic field charged with emotion. “I want to see something come to life — something hard-won, bearing its own history and the trace of time spent in its making. My aim is to create something positive and affirming, filled with both light and darkness, contrasts, hesitations, and contradictions: open paintings that allow the viewer’s imagination to search, wander, and respond freely.” — James Lumsden
