Artist Comments
"This was based on a detail from a larger painting," says artist Janet Dyer. "I often take photos of my finished work with my iPad and then section out details and enlarge them, then paint from those enlargements. I can get a multitude of paintings out of one painting. Sometimes I literally cut the painting down to a section I like. I find cropping improves a lot of things. Cutting a dull painting in half may produce two or more interesting paintings." In this piece, Janet used brushes and one particular palette knife to give texture by layering and making marks. "A palette knife can drag the colors along without mixing them, so it may produce a more varied patch of color. Sometimes I use the knife to scrape the color into the canvas—the color gets pushed into the white canvas, producing some glowing jewel undertones."
About the Artist
Janet Dyer doesn’t like to spend too much time talking about her art, as she’d rather be creating it. She doesn’t have an artist statement, the traditional statement of purpose crafted by visual artists to explain their method. On becoming an artist, Janet simply states, “I picked up some crayons and pencils and brushes and kept using them.” She believes the process of creating art is equal in importance to the final product. The artist enjoys relinquishing control of her paintings to find delightful surprises in her so-called “mistakes.” Janet's expressively gestural yet bucolic landscapes are a testament to the success of her method.

Artist Patrick Duffy displays abstract spheres representing the cosmos. He creates a compelling dialogue between the imagination and the fundamentals of all things space. Patrick explores newly learned concepts and a unique way to visualize them through artwork and design. Within his creative techniques, shapes become symbols of time and process—guiding the eye and mind to think of dark solar windswept patterns that are balanced and engaging.
About the Artist
Artist Patrick Duffy creates multi-scaled abstract compositions that seek to realize patterns through process, form, and color. Growing up in the coastal town of Blue Hill, Maine, he started creating artwork very early. He explores time, space, theoretical, and science fiction themes, describing his works as translated visions of paradoxes. Patrick received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2006, being part of many shows in New York, New England, and Houston, TX. Publications include The New York Times, “Things to See in the Hudson Valley†for the exhibition “Intricate Realities†at the Catskill Arts Society in 2016, as well as “Creating in Color†for Trouvé Magazine Volume 3 in 2015.
