About the Item
This 15" x 12" abstract acrylic on canvas painting by Washington artist, Janice Tayler, features a lively mix of abstract marks and soft colors. The composition is filled with pale shades of blue, pink, and lavender, creating a calm atmosphere. Bold black strokes crisscross the canvas, forming an energetic and slightly chaotic structure. Over those, bright yellow drips and splashes add movement and excitement. Softer areas of teal and light purple appear, balancing the boldness with gentler tones. The surface itself is richly textured, showing layers of thick and thin paint, which gives it a sense of depth.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Tayler now resides with her husband in the Pacific Northwest. Since 2004, she has sold and exhibited her work across Canada, the USA, and Europe. In Canada, she is represented by Warehouse Artworks. In the USA, she is represented by Ryan James Gallery in Kirkland, Seattle, and 1515 Lincoln Gallery in Oklahoma City.
"My artworks evolve through a hands-on exploration of materials. I use images from photographs and drawings of the devastation of the urban landscape from natural and manmade disasters, architectural skeletal structures such as unfinished construction or demolished sites, partly finished bridges, and abandoned and decaying industrial sites. The canvas transforms into a dynamic space for spontaneous brushwork, charcoal gestures, bold strokes of ink applied with a roller, dripping paint from a brush or container, and materials such as paper or cardboard collaged on the surface. I work quickly and intuitively. I shift between the wall and the floor, engaging in a rhythmic duet with the canvas. I turn it from a horizontal to a vertical orientation. I build up the surface and then strip it away, revealing the layers beneath. The process serves as a metaphor for the complexities of life, representing a collision of expression and moments in time."
