About the Item
In his recognizable, raw, and graphic style, Jason Hackenwerth's paintings from his "Pasture" series point to stories of struggle and transformation, as remnants of words peek through layers of paint that have been erased and reapplied. Civic and personal self-correction become a theme in Hackenwerth’s oeuvre. His paintings serve as allegories for problems that individuals and society are working through. To underscore this point, he's created glyphs of abstracted, fluffy sheep that reveal our susceptibility to becoming mere followers or part of an unreflective flock. In this way, each work examines the oscillation between conscious awareness and compulsive thought.

Jason Hackenwerth, a multidisciplinary artist working in the fields of painting, sculpture, and installation, is best known internationally for creating arresting and massive sculptures from colorful, latex balloons. His loose and spontaneous paintings begin in response to social, political, and personal issues. The dynamic scenarios that unfold on his paintings' surfaces are the artist’s way of working through his own emotions related to media bombardment and life's challenges. Each painting offers both struggle and resolution. Jason received his MFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design and his Bachelor of Fine Art in printmaking from Webster University. His work has been featured in publications such as Art Desk, Creative Review UK, American Craft, Design Journal, Art In America, Sculpture Magazine, The New York Times, Creative Review, and London Metro. Noted projects include commissions by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2014) and The New York Times (2011) as well as installations at the Victoria & Albert Museum (2012) and appearances at the Venice Biennale (2005) and Art Basel, Miami (2016). Jason is a 2011 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Inc. grant recipient and a two-time recipient of the Creative Pinellas Professional Artist Grant. He currently lives and works in St. Petersburg, FL.

For Real
By John Randall Nelson
Located in Los Angeles, CA
John Randall Nelson is an Arizona-based painter and sculptor. Nelson’s works are layered with his own personal language consisting of patterns, symbols, and archetypes that may not make any literal sense but play on subconscious associations. His paintings are thick with poured pigment, saturated washes and worked with layers of drawing and collage. While Nelson's work is akin to outsider, folk art, it should be noted that he received his MFA from Arizona State University in 1995 and has completed commissions for projects as diverse as the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States Postal Service...
