Jean Feinberg"Checking Automne" Abstract Geometric Oil Paint on Wood Mixed Media Orange Red
About the Item
Checking Automne, 2017, Oil on Found Wood 7.5 x 64 x 1.5 Inches. This painting is currently on view in a one-person exhibition of the artist's works at the Beth Urdang Gallery in Boston.
Jean Feinberg is a NY based artist whose geometric abstractions, paintings on found wood and paintings on painted plywood , are extraordinarily fresh, rather quirky, and elegant. What sets Feinberg apart is her unique sensibility which is at once quite formal and knowledgeable, drawing upon the great traditions of geometric painting in this country and overseas, as well as imparting a very personal aesthetic which is lighthearted and fun. Feinberg has a fabulous sense of color, placement and scale, and her approach to materials elevates the mundane into works of art which are beautifully engaging and sophisticated.
Artist’s Statement:
“My work is abstract and non-objective, characterized by a sparse sense of geometry and a lush, rich, and complex color. My love of the Hudson Valley with its particular light and color has had a profound effect on my life and work. Landscape light and weather, place and incidental moment, joy and wonder in color and color mixing/seeing are my ongoing inspiration.
Though the term constructions may best describe what I do, I consider the works more related to painting than sculpture because of the frontal orientation meant to be seen on the wall, and the importance of color and color relationships. My interest in the intersection between painting and object, with work that calls attention to its physicality, has been an ongoing characteristic of my work throughout my painting life.
In the current work, the salvaged wood is often origin and/or counterpoint to the color interventions, which stand clearly defined in opaque, matte, and uninflected paint application. Color notations or the use of found color in the form of paint chips or colored papers have become a foundational part of my working process despite the fact that the decisions about color are intuitive.”
Jean Feinberg began exhibiting her work in NY in Soho in the 1970s as an invited artist at the women’s gallery A.I.R. and at the then new Mary Boone Gallery. She has since been included in many solo and group shows at the National Academy Museum, the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Princeton Museum of Art, Angles Gallery in California, Stefan Stux Gallery, the Jersey City Museum, Galeria Durban in Venezuela, and the John Davis Gallery. She has been represented for over 20 years by the Beth Urdang Gallery in Boston.
Feinberg is the recipient of grants, fellowships, and residencies from the National Endowment for the Arts, Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, and the Edward Albee Foundation. Works are represented in public and private collections in the US and Europe including the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, Parasol Press, Werner Kramarsky, Best Products, IBM Corporation, Amerata-Hess, and Champion International.
Reviews of her exhibitions have appeared Art in America, Artforum, Arts, Art International, ArtNews, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe among others.
The artist holds a BS in Fine Arts from Skidmore College and an MA in Painting from Hunter College. She was formerly an Assistant Professor in Fine Arts at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and after many years of living and working in Tribeca in NYC she currently resides in Upstate New York.

Jean Feinberg
Jean Feinberg is an American abstract painter who uses paint, wood, canvas and paper to explore the intersection of painting and object. Using salvaged wood, she constructs paintings that incorporate sculptural qualities, blurring the lines between 2D and 3D representation. She lives and works in New York City.
Feinberg works with a variety of techniques and mediums, including painting, paper collage and installation. The majority of her work incorporates the application of paint, gesso, canvas and other mediums to found and salvaged wood. Her process results in abstract paintings, sometimes called constructions, which utilize geometric abstraction and lush, dramatic color patterns to explore relationships between color, material and space.
The work defies objective reference points, instead evoking meditative qualities and facilitating emotional explorations. Feinberg gains inspiration from her environment, in particular, the interplay of light and color in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. She is also guided in her color choices and compositional decisions by wood, paint chips and other found materials she incorporates into her constructions.
Inspired by notions of landscape, nature, time, space and feeling, Feinberg's abstract constructions communicate feelings about the partnership of human-made materialism with more transcendent elements of nature.

Anila Quayyum Agha examines issues of global politics, cultural identity, mass media and gender roles in her multidisciplinary practice. The Pakistani-American artist is best known for her immersive, large-scale light installations in which she laser-cuts elaborate patterns into three-dimensional cubes. Suspended and lit from within, the cubes cast lace-like, floor-to-ceiling shadows that completely transform the surrounding environment, alluding to the richly ornamented public spaces such as mosques that Agha was excluded from as a female growing up in Lahore.
In addition to her suspended light installations, Agha also creates wall-mounted sculptural works, including her Flowers series (2018) that explores love and loss inspired by the mixed emotions she experienced following her son’s wedding and mother’s passing, events that happened in the same year. Although these works may appear decorative, they are imbued with meaning, from the floral patterns that express the beauty and femininity of her mother, to the metallic threads commonly used for wedding dresses in Pakistan. The visual elements collectively amplify the interplay between the matrimonial and the funereal, and by extension, the larger cycle of life.
To produce these elaborate works, Agha laser-cuts vibrantly hued encaustic paper with intricate patterns and adorns them with light-reflecting embroidery and beads. These exquisitely detailed drawings are framed within shadow boxes, allowing light to pass through the cut-outs and cast patterned shadows in a manner similar to her large-scale light installations. The framing and shadows allow these works to transcend their two-dimensionality.
Anila Quayyum Agha has an M.F.A. in fiber arts from the University of North Texas. She has exhibited her work across the globe, including in the 2018 Kansas City Biennale, curated by Dan Cameron; the Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts; the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York; the Dallas Contemporary Art Museum, Texas; the National Museum of Sculpture, Valladolid, Spain; and the Cheongju Craft Biennale, Korea. Her work is in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio; the Grand Rapids Art...

Untitled (Spray Painting 5) : contemporary abstract work of art
Located in New York, NY
Abstract geometric artwork by a contemporary artist Gerald Wolfe.
Gerald Wolfe’s wall pieces have a three-dimensional, architectural feel. The artist’s approach to his paintings is intuitive. He meticulously creates his works step by step, imbuing shapes and lines with energy. The interplay of forms, color, and texture creates tension between flatness and depth. His work can become a unique gift and will be a wonderful addition to any space, be it a living room of a modern home or a lobby of a commercial building.
Gerald Wolfe received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Maryland in 1972, discovered his interest in art and went on to study fine arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In the summer of 1974, he also studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. From his first show in 1979, a summer invitational at OK Harris Gallery, Gerald has shown his work on a consistent basis in New York, including such galleries as Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC, and Kim Foster Gallery, NYC . Martin worked as the assistant to legendary artist Sam Gilliam for 12 years in his D.C. studio, after graduating from Carnegie Mellon where Sam was his Masters Mentor and guide.
Over the past decade, he has incorporated mixed media and found objects into his abstract expressionist oil paintings on canvas, introducing new textural quality similar to Gilliam arts, which he helped to originate while his assistant. Martin received a B.F.A. degree from SUNY Purchase where he was inspired by figurative and abstract expressionism which evolved into his own style which Sam discovered in recruiting him to come to Pittsburgh to study for his M.F.A. degree with him where he credits his further artistic development with Gilliam.
His works have been acquired by corporate patrons such as the Estée Lauder Companies, Eli Lilly and Company, Citigroup, Agatha Gund (past Chr of M.O.M.A) and Bill Kurtis TV Productions , who produced a TV special on A&E Channel entitled, "The Shattered Mind." His work has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions and presented two solo exhibitions at Fountain House Gallery in support of mental health. The prestigious New York gallery Vivian Horan Fine Art presented a solo exhibition of his work.
