This artwork is named after the first part of a French proverb, "faute de grives, on mange des merles", which is equivalent to "half a loaf is better than none". A literal translation would be "when no thrushes, eat blackbirds".
One can distinguish eleven people walking side by side, each surrounded with a multicolored aura distinctly bordered by tall thin vertical "walls". On the foreground, black curvy strokes or words stand out on white splashes figuring water or snow.
This piece is not framed.
Jean-Humbert Savoldelli is a talented French artist. After years of hyperrealism and trompe l'œil, he figured in 2013 that his creativity was imprisoned and decided to free it by changing radically his techniques and style, now devoting to abstract expressionism.
