Jean SoyerPowerful Dynamic Black on Red Motion Abstract Oil Painting
About the Item
A powerful abstract oil painting on canvas by contemporary artist Jean Soyer. This striking artwork measures 35 × 51 inches (89 × 130 cm) and features dramatic sweeping movements in vibrant red, black, and amber hues. The artist employs his signature technique using large brushes and combs to create dynamic textural reliefs across the canvas. Bold gestural strokes and rich color contrasts create a sense of energy and passionate movement in this expressive piece.
Jean Soyer's dramatic red abstract captivates with its explosive energy and masterful balance of chaos and control. The painting exemplifies Soyer's unique approach to abstract expressionism, where bold gestural marks and thick textural elements create a visceral emotional response. The sweeping crimson forms appear to dance across the canvas, reminiscent of the dynamic action painting techniques developed by Georges Mathieu, one of Soyer's acknowledged influences.
The painting reveals a dialogue between Soyer's contemporary vision and the rich legacy of abstract masters. While Nicolas de Staël's influence can be seen in the structured color blocks and textural quality, there are also echoes of Pierre Soulages in the bold black brushwork and dramatic contrast. The amber accents against the deep red background create a sense of depth that draws the viewer into what might suggest a whirlwind or cosmic vortex.
This work demonstrates Soyer's technical mastery through layered paint application and the creation of relief-like surfaces. His use of large brushes and combs to manipulate thick oil paint produces a three-dimensional quality that catches light and shadow, making the painting change subtly as one moves around it. This tactile approach connects Soyer to contemporary artists like Fabienne Verdier while maintaining his distinctive artistic voice.
The painting invites multiple interpretations while remaining firmly rooted in the abstract tradition. Its powerful energy, sophisticated color harmony, and textural richness make it a significant example of contemporary abstract expressionism that continues the legacy of the great 20th-century masters while speaking to present-day sensibilities.

In the middle of the road, 2017
oil on canvas over panel
48 x 48 x 1.75 inches
For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form.
The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de
Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...
