About the Item
This artwork really demonstrates Jean Soyer's skills. It features a red and black cone-shaped comb back and forth movement following the top-left to bottom right diagonal, on a black and red background. The choice of colors, their contrast and the composition already make a strong argument. Jean Soyer manages to keep the background demarcations visible below the foreground painting. Likewise, he is able to make the crossing comb movements either overwrite or merge. He also manages to make black lines emerge *perpendicularly* to the comb tracks, while following their movement. The comb bends renders very lightly, providing volume to the whole piece. The clever addition of red-orange painting adds depth. Last but not least, the heavy touch of impasto building up in the middle of the lower part of the canvas really brings balance to this amazing piece.
It has in common with other works of the artist rich impasto and reliefs, with lots of matter.
