Jeffrey Kurland
"LIVING CORAL", Abstract Painting, Acrylic on Canvas, Green & Orange

2019

About the Item

The large abstract painting "LIVING CORAL" by Jeffrey Kurland, with acrylic paint on canvas measuring 84" high by 84" wide, is new work from the spring of 2019. Often employing paints and pigments from surprising sources (automotive manufacturers, industrial finishers), the various green and orange colors appear in an calming structure. Jeffrey has developed his own methods and techniques to achieve this structure. He doesn't use brushes, but pours and directs the paint using a variety of methods. Kurland embraces spontaneity and intuition – there are no preparatory sketches. In this manner he pursues as much as captures the painting. Innovating technically, building structure on the canvas and pushing color abstraction forward on his own terms – bending, breaking, flowing and channeling color. Broad gesture and active, tactile surfaces emerge from the canvas through his experimental process and approach to materials, application and composition. Jeffrey Kurland received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Michigan, and an MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan. He’s been living and working in New York City since 1976, developing his art practice which includes painting, drawing, collage, monoprints, and book arts.

"Strengths and Weaknesses", acrylic, charcoal, art history, abstract, portrait
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Strengths and Weaknesses" is a portrait exploring several elements and strategies that fascinate the artist – notably the performance anxiety induced by simply being an artist, staring down the freight train of art history as it hurtles toward you every time you pick up a brush. Luck? Talent? Maybe. There are signposts and guides in this painting, of course (Cubism! Surrealism! Brancusi! Guston!), but they can clobber you too if you're not careful. Even the phrase "strengths and weaknesses" smacks of compromises and rationalization – deadly to an artist looking to construct their own integral world. "Strengths and Weaknesses" is an acrylic and charcoal on canvas measuring 54" tall by 54" wide. It was included in the artist's solo show "Comedy Cellar" at Freight + Volume Gallery, New York City in July 2018. (See last photograph for an installation view.) From Daniel Gerwin – "Schenck’s color is vibrant, wild, saturated to the point of overheating, and altogether brilliant in the balancing of hues, temperatures, shapes, and color quantities. The paintings have a remarkable coherence for their dizzying juxtaposition of so many small chromatic passages." (Essay: The Anxiety and the Ecstasy) Peter Schenck...

'Subliminal' Colorful Mixed Media Contemporary Abstract by Steven H. Rehfeld
By Steven H. Rehfeld
Located in Carmel, CA
This 20" x 30" contemporary abstract mixed media piece by Steven Rehfeld is a captivating exploration of form, color, and texture. The composition features a harmonious blend of soft pastel hues — calming blues, delicate pinks, and mellow yellows — juxtaposed against more assertive tones of deep magenta, vibrant orange, and charcoal gray. The painting showcases Rehfeld's signature style of blending geometric shapes, notably triangles and circles, with freer, more organic brushstrokes. The added depth is achieved through the inclusion of mixed media elements: fragments of paper with faint sketches, scribbles, and translucent overlays create a multidimensional visual experience. The smoky, sinuous black mark towards the center adds a hint of dynamism, while the layered application of paint and paper produces a tactile richness, making the piece an engaging visual journey. Steven is now one of the top emerging artists in the U.S. His works are groundbreaking, bold, and imbued with unflinching disregard for painting conventions. Many works are in collections and museums in the U.S. Steven is also part of the 'Outsiders' school of art, originating in France in the 19th century. Also known as the Naïve movement, and was comprised of people with no art training at all, who suddenly started to paint. Many of them are from very challenging backgrounds. All they had was talent that had never before been tapped. In no time this movement became a significant art phenomenon and spread all over the world. His work, however, has branched out past the movement and his use of earth elements renders a basic and raw interpretation of his message. Original, 1-of-1. Shown at the American Art Gallery, Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. Keywords: colorful, mixed media, contemporary, abstract, expressionism, blue, pink, yellow, magenta, orange, grey, Steven H...
