Jeffrey Kurland
"MAD ROSE", Acrylic on Canvas, Abstract, Red, Blue, Green & Orange

2019

About the Item

The large abstract painting "MAD ROSE" by Jeffrey Kurland, with acrylic paint on canvas measuring 79" high by 93" wide, is new work from the summer of 2019. Often employing paints and pigments from surprising sources (automotive manufacturers, industrial finishers), the various red, blue, green and orange colors appear in an energetic circular structure. The name "Mad Rose" comes from the color rose madder, a traditional pigment extracted from the common madder plant Rubia Tinctorum. "MAD ROSE" was a key artwork in the artist's solo show at Art of Our Century gallery in Greenwich Village, New York City. The show ran January 16 to February 16, 2020. Jeffrey has developed his own methods and techniques to achieve this structure. He doesn't use brushes, but pours and directs the paint using a variety of methods. Kurland embraces spontaneity and intuition – there are no preparatory sketches. In this manner he pursues as much as captures the painting. Innovating technically, building structure on the canvas and pushing color abstraction forward on his own terms – bending, breaking, flowing and channeling color. Broad gesture and active, tactile surfaces emerge from the canvas through his experimental process and approach to materials, application and composition. Jeffrey Kurland received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Michigan, and an MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan. He’s been living and working in New York City since 1976, developing his art practice which includes painting, drawing, collage, monoprints, and book arts.

"Strengths and Weaknesses", acrylic, charcoal, art history, abstract, portrait
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Strengths and Weaknesses" is a portrait exploring several elements and strategies that fascinate the artist – notably the performance anxiety induced by simply being an artist, staring down the freight train of art history as it hurtles toward you every time you pick up a brush. Luck? Talent? Maybe. There are signposts and guides in this painting, of course (Cubism! Surrealism! Brancusi! Guston!), but they can clobber you too if you're not careful. Even the phrase "strengths and weaknesses" smacks of compromises and rationalization – deadly to an artist looking to construct their own integral world. "Strengths and Weaknesses" is an acrylic and charcoal on canvas measuring 54" tall by 54" wide. It was included in the artist's solo show "Comedy Cellar" at Freight + Volume Gallery, New York City in July 2018. (See last photograph for an installation view.) From Daniel Gerwin – "Schenck’s color is vibrant, wild, saturated to the point of overheating, and altogether brilliant in the balancing of hues, temperatures, shapes, and color quantities. The paintings have a remarkable coherence for their dizzying juxtaposition of so many small chromatic passages." (Essay: The Anxiety and the Ecstasy) Peter Schenck...
