About the Item
The large abstract painting "TEARS OF RAGE" is a diptych by Jeffrey Kurland, with acrylic paint on canvas measuring 48" tall by 104" wide when combined as shown (each canvas is 48x52"). TEARS OF RAGE is new work from the long summer of 2020. Often employing paints and pigments from surprising sources (automotive manufacturers, industrial finishers), here specifically the artist works saturated reds and blues across both canvases, suggesting repetition with variations in the rhythm and shape of the painted structure.
Jeffrey has developed his own methods and techniques to achieve this structure. He doesn't use brushes but pours and directs the paint using a variety of methods. Kurland embraces spontaneity and intuition – there are no preparatory sketches. In this manner he pursues as much as captures the painting.
Innovating technically, building structure on the canvas and pushing color abstraction forward on his own terms – bending, breaking, flowing and channeling color. Broad gesture and active, tactile surfaces emerge from the canvas through his experimental process and approach to materials, application and composition.
Jeffrey Kurland received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Michigan, and an MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan. He’s been living and working in New York City since 1976, developing his art practice which includes painting, drawing, collage, monoprints, and book arts.
