About the Item
"Tokolosh" is part of a series of circular abstracts that Jennifer Blalack worked on in 2020. This piece, in particular depicting Zulu mythology. In Zulu mythology, the Tokolosh is a creature sent by a witch doctor to jinx enemies. If you keep your bed off the floor, the Tokolosh can't reach you because he is short with wobbly legs. As a result, he will become very frustrated and may well turn back upon his dispatcher. In this work, she experiments with several different media, making the painting sculptural, and it has great relief in the texture. Blalack has made a boisterous mixture from pale to deep pinks, whites, greens, and blacks. She uses different materials to create patterns within the work, as well.
