About the Item

Painted by Jim Jacobs (American, born 1945), titled, 'Nankaweep' and dated 1983. Previously with Lopoukhine Gallery, Boston. A substantial, dynamic abstract comprising staccato geometric and angular impressions in shades of charcoal and scarlet contrasted against a background of clouded lilac, silver and parchment. Jim Jacobs is known for large abstract works that play with form and space, often referencing specific states, places or cities. Born in New York, Jacobs studied at Boston University, Harvard and Bryn Mawr and first worked as a lecturer and gallery director in New England. After returning to NY, he worked as a archivist for Leo Castelli Gallery and as an assistant to sculptor John Chamberlain for four years. In 1976, he began showing his own Minimalist lacquer paintings in New York. He later incorporated "Appropriated Art" elements into his work and, subsequently, art deco designs. Recently, he has focused on abstractions based on aerial landscapes including views of the naturally formed topography of the Grand Canyon as is the case with this painting which shows a view of Nankoweap, the old Native American canyon trail. Jacobs has exhibited widely and with success including at the Elizabeth Weiner Gallery, Galerie Yves Arman, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Lowe Art Museum in Ft. Lauderdale Florida.
