Joanna Pousette-Dart (American, b. 1947) is a contemporary abstract painter. While she does not claim formal involvement in any particular movement, her style can be most closely associated with Modernist hard-edge and geometric abstraction. Her recognizable corpus took shape mid-career in the mid-80s, inspired by the landscape and skyscape of her newly adopted home state of New Mexico. Taping together panorama photographs of the New Mexico horizon as inspiration, Pousette-Dart shaped her canvases to echo the curvature and rich colors of both the Southwest.
Pousette-Dart was included in the 1972 Whitney Biennial. In 1981 she was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. Her work has been featured in shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the PS1 Contemporary Art Museum in New York, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She was recently reviewed in 2019 and 2017 by Hyperallergic. Pousette-Dart is in the collections of the Albright Knox Museum; Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Guggenheim Museum, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY and the Portland Art Museum, OR.
