Nicholas Evans
"Le Crâne" (Abstract Skull Painting on Pale Pink Background, Canvas, 50 x 50cm)

2020

About the Item

LE CRÂNE 2020 Paris, France A faint gesture of a skull, ‘le crane,’ lives on a pale pink background, and interacts with other abstract detailing, creating movement and tension. Evans uses oil and acrylic paint, with layers of Indian ink and wood stain on the foreground of the canvas. Unframed; includes d-hooks on back for hanging. Evans Deventer signature stamp features painting name, location of where work was done and year. -- Nicholas Evans (b. 1982) is an American, Paris-based artist, designer and creative director. Painting is a cornerstone of Evans’ artistic expression, which is largely inspired by personal events, religious symbolism, and historical allegories. In addition to traditional oil and acrylics, Evans uses materials such as plasters, wax, salt and found objects in his works, presenting a way to seek new meaning in elements that have collapsed or eroded over time. Threads of poetry convey the fragmented logic of suffering, lost love and redemption that push him to create. After early success in New York’s fashion and creative industry, followed by nearly losing his life to addiction, a liver transplant gave way to new perspective and allowed Evans to reinvent himself. Inspired to revisit the rudiments of expression through his first love of painting, Nicholas began working under the moniker of Evans Deventer to present his art. Through Evans Deventer, he is continuously intrigued by the ‘decayed decadence’ of long-held traditions and the looming past, and how to represent them visually. Evans Deventer is also represented as a brick and mortar space, which he designed in 2015, featuring furniture, jewelry and objects, in addition to artwork.

TIME, IT TAKES I 2022 Paris, France A graphic and bold abstract painting on linen, with dark blue green ink and white acrylic accents. A single, bold, orange line is situated on the left side of the painting, a commentary on markers of time as an ineffective unit of measurement. Time interpreted not as linear, but an experience outside of numbers and outside of logic. Option to create a pair alongside "Time, It Takes II" (as pictured). Price and size are per painting. • "Set Us In Stone I" (abstract, blue, Parisian, graphic, bust on natural canvas)
    By Nicholas Evans
    Located in Paris, IDF
SET US IN STONE I 2022 Paris, France Originally created as part of Nicholas' solo exhibition "This, and Thereafter (Plumes)," December 10, 2022 - January 7, 2023. The theme illustrated the enigmatic uncertainty around what might happen after life. A range of paintings were presented – vibrant and ethereal – touching on different aspects of this notion. Each painting had a different point of view, oftentimes focusing around the inevitability of what is to come, and if and how it influences the present. This particular piece centers around personal legacy, how you will be remembered, and how your life vanishes into an abstraction as time goes by. This notion is visualized with a bust set in stone. The technique Evans used was a mixing of water-based ink with a hint of blue, that he knew would react when overlaid with white acrylic, pulling out a lighter hue of the blue ink. The white silhouette of a portrait set in stone creates a ghostly continuation of the underlaid pattern. Option to create a pair alongside "Set Us In Stone II" (as pictured). Price and size are per painting. Evans Deventer...

  • "Lus Osculi" (Abstract Black & White, Graphic Painting, Roman-inspired, Neutral)
    By Nicholas Evans
    Located in Paris, IDF
Drawing inspiration from the ancient Roman term "Los Osculi," translating to "right to kiss," the artist delves into a compelling exploration of the past's intriguing customs. In ancient Rome, women were prohibited from drinking as it was believed to lead to adultery and even possess abortifacient properties. Consequently, the husband and male family members of an "honest" woman possessed the right to kiss her on the mouth to ensure her sobriety. The allure of fleeting kisses, whispers of scent, and the sensuality of suspicion captivated the artist's imagination. On an antique French canvas...
