About the Item

This large major Museum work measures 66"x82" it is by John CRASH Matos a true Legend of the Graffiti movement. Crash was first noticed through his murals on subway cars and is now regarded as a pioneer of the Graffiti art movement. His work is said to convey a "visual link between street life and established society". and in 1980, Crash curated the now iconic exhibition: "Graffiti Art Success for America" at Fashion MODA, launching the graffiti movement into a mainstream art movement. In 1983, Crash was given his first major gallery showing at the legendary Sidney Janis Gallery in New York City. The first time a Graffiti artist ever exhibited at a major gallery, around the same time Keith Haring started showing at the Tony Shafrazi gallery, taking street art and graffiti art from the streets to a fine art gallery. CRASH has been part of numerous museum and gallery shows around the world focusing on Graffiti and Street Art, and has works in many permanent museum collections. Crash also has painted Stratocaster guitars for Eric Clapton and John Mayer. Those guitars are known as Crashocasters. and Fender guitars was so impressed with the work Crash did for Clapton and John Mayer that Fender guitars commissioned Crash to create a line of 50 limited edition guitars on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster Guitar. This painting on canvas by Crash features his iconic EYE as a design element within the art along with a white spray painted burst, another design element and a Pocket watch featured on the top left of the canvas. His name CRASH is also a major element in this impressive painting. The canvas is signed titled and dated 2014 on the back. and also signed on the bottom left front. A Gem of a painting by this graffiti legend.
