About the Item

Exceptional impasto abstract painting of the Big Sur Coastlands in the style of Wayne Theibaud by Carmel and Pacific Grove, California artist John J. LaPierre (American, 1925-2015). Unframed. Circa 1967. We are including the original frame AS IS, it has a gold toned plastic leading edge trim piece that always shrinks and as such is not perfect. Many artists benefited from the work of Wayne Theibaud, including John LaPierre and Greg Kondos who's styles during the abstract expressionist 60's overlap. John was a graduate of the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland CA with a B.A. in Art Education, and a M.A. from Stanford. John was a member of the Pacific Grove High School Art Department for 33 years, and also a life-time member of the Carmel Art Association. John La Pierre served in the U.S. Nay for three years before commencing his college education. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts (B.A.), Stanford University (M.A.), and the Instituto Allende, Mexico (M.F.A.). His teaching career began at Avenal High School, and in 1952 having moved to the Monterey Peninsula, he became the art instructor at Pacific Grove High School. He lived in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, in 1957 and 1958, where he was a crafts director for the U.S. Army. He has had one man shows at the Carmel Art Association, the Pacific Grove Art Center, Los Robles Gallery, the Stanford Research Institute in Palo Alto, the Coffee Tree Gallery in Vacaville, and the Parroquia Gallery in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. His work has been shown at the San Bernardino National Orange show, Oakland Art Museum, Erlangen University in Germany and the Monterey County Fair & Monterey Jazz Festival.
