And a River Flows Through #2
Original Abstract Painting
Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Canvas Size: H 80cm x W 100cm x D 4.5cm
And a River Flows Through #2 is an original painting by Jon Rowland. One of a series of paintings that explored the colour and form of landscape – see also ‘And a river flows through – #1 and #3’ for further information.
Wychwood Art have exhibited Jon Rowland in London during a pop-up exhibition of theirs at the Darren Baker Gallery. Jon comments “I have exhibited in London and Oxford. My paintings have been displayed at the Royal Academy and at the Berthold and Darren Baker Gallery in London. I have also exhibited at Linacre and Green Colleges as part of group exhibitions, at the Borlase Gallery in Blewbury and Swann Gallery in Woodstock, and most recently had exhibitions at Canal Street Studios, the Said Business School and Wolfson College in Central Oxford. I work in mixed media based on acrylics. The themes of my paintings have emerged from trips to, among other locations, Venice, Scotland, Cuba and France. I work in series and much of my work is built around themes of rural landscapes most recently in the South West, Clovelly Beach in Sydney, and the exploration of detail – part of the ‘Portraying the Essence’ theme. Recently I have concentrated on landscapes and cityscapes exploring colour and space. My paintings are in private collections in the UK and elsewhere. There’s a story to every picture. “Painting is a journey. The picture takes on life of its own, sometimes going with your flow, sometimes challenging you. Chance and opportunity are the travelling companions; but the art is to know when the journey is complete.

Discover new paintings by Jon Rowland and his abstract expressionism with Wychwood Art. Each work has been carefully selected by Deborah Allan our Chief Art Curator. Wychwood Art have exhibited Jon Rowland in London during a pop-up exhibition of theirs at the Darren Baker Gallery. His paintings have been displayed at the Royal Academy and at the Berthold and Darren Baker Gallery in London. He has also exhibited in group exhibitions at Linacre and Green Colleges, at Swann Gallery in Woodstock, and with Wychwood Art at Battersea Art Fair. He was one of six contemporary artists who took part in an exhibition of views of Blenheim Palace, juxtaposing the original visions with today's, as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Capability Brown's birth. Solo exhibitions have been at the Said Business School, Wolfson College in Central Oxford, and most recently at the Sewell Centre Art Gallery and Cornerstone Art Centre in Oxfordshire, and the Boiler Room Gallery in Central Oxford. Through Wychwood Art, he has carried out several large scale commissions for private clients. Jon comments: Painting is a journey. One starts at one place - the blank canvas, and hopefully ends at a resolution. Sometimes one gets lost. My aim in this journey is to create original, contemporary art that is grounded in place. Chance and opportunity are the travelling companions; but the art is to know when the journey is complete. I tend to work in series, with references to locations that are abstracted, reflecting on themes of colour, movement and space. In some themes I use concepts of detail to examine and manipulate emerging abstraction. The challenge is to express its essence. My work in various places, including Provence with its Mediterranean sunshine, has enabled me to explore the complementarities, juxtapositions, hues and depths of colour. Recent visits to Crete and Sicily reinforced this approach to colour and vibrancy. There, the bright pinks, yellows and turquoise of the landscape and the richness of the place itself have been important in gradually changing my palette. The pictures you see are an expression of this personal place. His work is predominantly in acrylics but increasingly mixing the media to include oil, ink, and collage. His work is colourful and distinctive.

A807 - Large Scale Soft Minimalist Contemporary Color Field Abstract Painting
By Marco Schmidli
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Marco Schmidli’s "A807" is a large captivating abstract painting that merges ethereal textures, atmospheric washes, and gestural marks in a soft yet dynamic composition. The interplay of deep crimson, soft blues, and neutral tones creates a weathered, almost celestial aesthetic, reminiscent of distressed frescoes or aged patina surfaces. This large-scale contemporary artwork exudes a sense of mystery and movement, making it a perfect statement piece for modern interiors seeking organic movements and meditative depth.
Swiss born artist Marco Schmidli creates minimalist paintings with a contemporary edge. Placing emphasis on process, he lets the mediums naturally manifest within his artwork. “An important aspect of my artwork is the removal of my own artistic hand. Instead of controlling and demanding the paint move and act a certain way, I let the paint naturally manifest and express its pure form/ true colors/ most natural movement.” Schmidli's work is known for its sensitive surfaces and subtle textures. He has developed specialized techniques for applying and layering color, giving depth to his paintings.
The textural nuances and expansive scale of "A807" evoke both intimacy and grandeur, making it a versatile statement piece for collectors seeking to transform their spaces. Its calming palette and layered abstract forms invite contemplation, imbuing any environment with elegance and depth.
In "A807", a 96-inch tall by 72-inch wide abstract composition, Schmidli showcases his signature approach of letting the medium naturally manifest, creating an ethereal and evocative piece. Swirling purple tones juxtaposed against a soft, misty palette of blues, whites, and muted pastels give this artwork an atmospheric and meditative quality, reminiscent of color field studies with a contemporary edge.
Schmidli studied photography and fine art in Switzerland and Rome. He worked as a photographer and painter in Zurich and then in 1989 he moved to California. In addition to fine art, Schmidli’s work has graced the film and entertainment industries, from fashion spreads to celebrity portraits, music videos, and red-carpet events. His paintings have been featured in iconic publications like Vogue, Flaunt, and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as campaigns for brands such as Nike and Balenciaga.
