Joan-Josep Tharrats i Vidal
constellation original abstract acrylic paper painting

1990

About the Item

constellation original acrylic paper painting . frame Son of Josep Tharrats i Vilà, in 1932 he moved to Béziers until 1935, when he returned to Barcelona to study at the Massana School. The Spanish Civil War interrupted his studies until 1942, which recommenced his artistic activity. Initially influenced by Impressionism, it evolved into abstract art under the influence of Piet Mondrian and Vasily Kandinsky. In 1946 he used cut-outs, stains and glues as a material. In 1947 he met at the French Institute of Barcelona the artists and writers Arnau Puig, Joan Ponç, Modest Cuixart, Antoni Tàpies and Joan Brossa, with whom he founded the group Dau al Set, organizing exhibitions, cultural activities and editing the magazine Dau al Set. He exhibited individually for the first time in 1949 in the El Jardín de Barcelona Galleries, and since then he has become one of the most internationally known Catalan painters. From 1954 he exhibited regularly in the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona, as well as in 1955 in Stockholm and New York, in 1959 in the V Bienal de São Paulo and in the Venice Biennials of 1960 and 1964. In 1966 he founded the Association of Current Artists. He was one of the pioneers of post-war Catalan avant-garde. He evolved from a linear abstraction of surrealist influence in his stage of Dau al Set, towards an informalism of rich texture, abundant color and free spelling. In its magical universe the forms fluctuate freely. He had his own version of the stamping techniques (maculatures) that allowed him to achieve fantasy creations. He also made posters, illustrated books and made murals, stained glass windows, mosaics, jewelry and opera scenographies (Spleen, 1984). In 1983 he received the Creu de Sant Jordi Prize of the Generalitat of Catalonia and in 1994 the National Prize of Plastic Arts of the Ministry of Culture of Spain, entering that same year in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi.
