Joe Ostraff is a professor of art at Brigham Young University. He received a BFA from Brigham Young University and a MFA from the University of Washington. He is married to Melinda Weston, an ethno-botanist. Together they are raising six children. They have collaborated extensively over the past thirty years. This interaction has had a deep impact on his art practice. They have worked together developing significant collaborative projects with Wirral Met, Liverpool, England; Kau Taha Mataika, Vava’u, Tonga; and Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi, Whakatane, New Zealand, resulting in three documentary films and numerous exhibitions in painting, video installations, works on paper and book arts.
Of his new work Ostraff says: These paintings reflect a longing to locate myself within the human and physical geography and to generate some form of conversation. There is a measure of anxiety associated with this longing... It is an uncomfortable compulsion that effects everything I do as I go about the business of unpacking myself. Sources of inspiration include shapes located within urban and natural landscape and things people give me, all flattened and compressed into paint. While ideas and questions inform my initial process, any clear interpretation of these connections as found in a completed work remains elusive to me and I find myself becoming accustom to that feeling.

"Wendover 3" by Joseph Ostraff, oil on panel, 36 X 31 inches, $4,800.
"For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. Feeling nostalgic, I think about all the noise and activity our home has absorbed. In turn, I found children’s large vinyl decals from Angry Birds...
