About the Item

Large Scale Mid-Century Earth-tone Horizontal Abstract by Joseph Vasica Very large scale (70"H x 160"W) (5.8'H x 13.3'L) mid-century abstract with soft edge, grey and burnt sienna medallion with beige and white surround with a modernist southwest vibe by famous California artist Joseph Vasica (American, 1921-2008), circa 1960. Thick layers of merging colors gives a soft focus look, in this monumental horizontal piece. Signed "Vasica". This would be stunning in a residential or commercial installation where a capstone piece is needed but doesn't overwhelm. (Rolled canvas shipping option permits for faster and economical delivery.) Canvas is shown with the edges visible for contrast definition, once stretch the painting covers to the edges of the paint with no border visible. Measurement doesn't include visible bare canvas edges. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1921, Vasica immigrated to Canada during World War II and then to the United States in 1960. After traveling throughout the country he settled in San Francisco calling it home for 44 years. He was an accomplished San Francisco artist, his paintings are held in museums and private collections. His works were highly praised by Alfred Frankenstein, a leading art critic of the era. His abstractions of the 1960's and 1970's are considered his most outstanding works and have been compared to Albrecht Durer by many art critics. His works are included in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the former Volante Collection (artists and collectors, specializing in early to mid 20th Century art and sculpture. His work was exhibited in 1970 at and is currently held in the collection of the Boise Gallery of Art, Boise, Idaho (known today as the Boise Art Museum). In 1971, he exhibited at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in a one man show. In 1977, Vasica exhibited at a one man show at the Hoover Gallery, San Francisco. He was also part of a group show at this same gallery in 1979. In 1980, he exhibited at the Vorpal Gallery in Soho, NY. Grey & Tan Abstract Expressionist Textural Mid-Century Abstract by Peter Witwer
By Peter Witwer
Located in Soquel, CA
Grey & Tan Abstract Expressionist Textural Mid-Century Abstract by Peter Witwer Heavily textured, expressive composition by Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). Over the top of a heavy base layer of plaster, Witwer has added various layers of oil paint, creating a massive amount of depth and texture. Sections of red peek out from underneath various shades of tan, grey, and black. Spots of blue and purple are used sparingly, hidden in the composition. Presented in a wood frame. Canvas size: 20"H x 40"W Frame size: 26.63"H x 46.63"W Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work. Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle. Born George Peter...

Mid Century Textural Color-Field Abstract in Royal Blue-Purple by Peter Witwer
By Peter Witwer
Located in Soquel, CA
Mid Century Textural Color-Field Abstract in Royal Blue-Purple by Peter Witwer A striking mid-century textural color-field abstract in a bold color palette of royal blue-purple by San Francisco artist Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). This highly textured mixed media piece, c.1960's, uses a monochromatic palette that is divided into two areas of varying textural depths. The lower part of the canvas verges on sculptural, as the textured surface becomes almost three-dimensional and haunting forms emerge from the abstract purple-blue plane. Unsigned. From a collection of the artist's works. Displayed in a painted wood slate frame. Frame has been painted by the artist and is considered part of the artwork. Linen size: 26"H x 22"W. Framed size: 27"H x 23"W x 1.2"D Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work.
