About the Item
This contemporary, abstract oil painting on canvas is composed of carefully combined sections of various textures and areas of pattern, circles, dots and undulations, in exuberant, cheerful color. Little moments in shades of orange, coral. olive and mint green, teal blue, yellow ochre and white happening within the layers of oil paint make the work especially rewarding. Signed and titled on verso.
Josette Urso makes paintings working directly and urgently in response to her immediate environment. Her approach involves moment-to-moment extrapolation governed by intuitive leaps of scale, color and wayward geometry. Contrasts and cross-fertilizations unfold and are cumulative, nonlinear, free-flowing and interpretive. Space becomes an ambiguous and malleable substance; its manipulation and acrobatic mark-making become a kind of gymnasium of expertly-placed color and shape.

The artist is the recipient of grants from The Adolph and Ester Gottlieb Foundation and The Pollack-Krasner Foundation, The Basil H. Alkazzi Award, USA and has been honored with residencies at Yaddo, UCross Foundation, and The Millay Colony for the Arts in the United States, as well as residencies in Spain, Germany, Ireland, Cambodia and Taiwan. Urso’s artwork has been acquired by numerous museums and private collections worldwide, including The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY, Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa, FL, Stadtmuseum, Schwandorf, Germany and Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, OH, to name a few. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

"Earth and Fire" is a beautiful abstract painting by Nancy Eckels. It exhibits the bold colors and textures that her work is known for. Nancy became a full time artist only after ending another creative career. She moved to California to attend college, and happily worked in television for many years. She was a director on the CBS daytime drama, "The Bold and the Beautiful" when she decided to move on to full time painting. Given her family background, it seemed like the most natural transition she could make.
Nancy was born in Kingston, New York, but moved to Utah at age 7 when her father was transferred for his work. With her family, she spent her summers exploring many of the national parks, and natural wonders of the west where her father loved to fish and photograph. He instilled in her a love and appreciation for the beauty and colors of nature, while her mother taught her many of the lessons of art.
