Josette Urso
Josette Urso, "Poolside" Oil on Canvas

2024

About the Item

Of her recent works, Urso states, "I make exploratory paintings, working in response to my immediate environment. My approach involves moment-to-moment extrapolation governed by intuitive leaps of scale, color, and wayward geometry. As I paint, contrasts and cross-fertilizations unfold and are cumulative, non-linear, free-flowing, and interpretive. Space becomes an ambiguous and malleable substance; its manipulation and acrobatic mark-making become a kind of gymnasium of image collision. My paintings are records of these explorations and of the activity that goes into painting them. They are about being immersed in the act of looking and engaging." Josette Urso makes paintings, watercolors and drawings in an urgent attempt to capture the essence and energy of whatever surrounds her – be it a landscape, a subway, an apartment view, or a dinner table. Her approach involves moment-to-moment extrapolation governed by intuitive leaps of scale, color and wayward geometry. She works from observation--intuitively, playfully--in a process that makes room for many visual surprises and an enormous range of inventive mark making.

Deborah Dancy "Believe it or Not" - Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas
By Deborah Dancy
Located in New York, NY
Deborah Dancy Believe it or Not, 2021 oil on canvas 32 x 34 in. (dan029) This original contemporary abstract painting by Deborah Dancy is comprised of hues of light pink, lime green, grey, and maroon in her signature built up/re-built space that as she says, "operate in a realm in which beauty and tension simultaneously exist without explanation or narrative." Deborah Dancy is an abstract artist. Her paintings and drawings are sensuous provocations beset with marks that guide, then abruptly collide into confrontational slabs of color. There is an atmosphere of complex but urgent tension in her work, as she builds tangential linear demarcations, and abutting shapes, that provoke, entice and disrupt; -taking us everywhere and nowhere. From densely painted forms to more minimally declared images, Dancy’s work operates in the recognition that meanderings, intentional and accidental declarations are best when the beautiful and the disconcerting exist simultaneously. Dancy was born in Bessemer, Alabama and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She earned BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MS and an MFA from Illinois State University. She is the recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Yaddo Fellow, and a National Endowment of the Arts NEFA award. Her work is in many collections including The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Birmingham Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum and The Detroit Institute of Art.
