About the Item
Thoughtfully combined sections of varying textures and areas of pattern, stripes, circles, dots and undulations are cheerful in bright, exuberant color. Little moments in red, burgundy, bright pink, lime green, yellow, orange, and shades of blue and white within the layers of oil paint on canvas make the work especially rewarding. Signed, dated, and titled on verso.
Josette Urso makes paintings working directly and urgently in response to her immediate environment. Her approach involves moment-to-moment extrapolation governed by intuitive leaps of scale, color, and wayward geometry. Contrasts and cross-fertilizations unfold and are cumulative, nonlinear, free-flowing, and interpretive. Space becomes an ambiguous and malleable substance; its manipulation and acrobatic mark-making become a kind of gymnasium of expertly-placed color and shape.

Alkazzi Award, USA and has been honored with residencies at Yaddo, UCross Foundation, and The Millay Colony for the Arts in the United States, as well as residencies in Spain, Germany, Ireland, Cambodia and Taiwan. Urso’s artwork has been acquired by numerous museums and private collections worldwide, including The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY, Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa, FL, Stadtmuseum, Schwandorf, Germany and Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, OH, to name a few. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe.
