About the Item
Juanita Guccione (American, 1904 - 1999) was an audacious and independent artist whose career defied classification. Born Anita Rice in Massachusetts, she lived and worked across Europe, North Africa, and New York, creating paintings that merge social realism, Cubism, Surrealism, and abstraction. Her early years in Algeria among the Ouled Nail tribe informed a lifelong fascination with mythic and otherworldly imagery, while her later studies with Hans Hofmann deepened her exploration of color and composition. Guccione’s paintings often depict desolate and dreamlike worlds that resist easy interpretation. Guccione has been part of our roster of modern masters since 2018, and included in this year’s Masters Exhibit is a richly colored work on paper with floating forms and a surreal sense of depth.
