About the Item

The Conviction of Things Not Seen #3 by Judith North [2021] Original Oil on canvas Image size: H:80 cm x W:80 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:80 cm x W:80 cm x D:2cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look The series, The Conviction of Things Not Seen, was inspired by the desire to make mindful paintings and drawings. Responding to being ‘in the moment’ and allowing one process to lead to another, the paintings were based on drawings of found hand-held objects and hand-made models. Judith North’s paintings often explore interior and exterior spaces or contemplate single objects. These spaces and objects, rooted in the real world, are constructed from observation and memory and tend to be devoid of context. Her painting process, involving the application and removal of successive layers of paint is part of her search to find equilibrium between the real and the imagined. She is attracted to the geometry in a subject and uses colour and composition to help create a sense of emotion and atmosphere. Born in Bristol, Judith graduated in fine art from the Sir John Cass School of Art and Design, London, having originally studied art history and mathematics.

Original abstract oil painting on canvas, textural layers with hidden history, white space, journey in marks. Inspired by balance. Kelly Washbourne, contemporary painter, available online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Kelly Washbourne’s work is of immeasurable depth, texture and colour. Every canvas represents its own journey as paint is layered and balanced to create exquisite colour relationships, provoking both thought and emotion. Taking months to complete, each piece becomes an evolving record of the painting process offering glimpses into the hidden history of its creation. She is known for the bold expression of her large pieces which are full of texture, energy and vibrancy. Her small canvases, which have become popular exhibited in grids, offer an endless variety of shades and brush strokes and create a unique artwork with every composition. Graduating from Falmouth University in 2002 with a BA Hons in Fine Art, Kelly finds her inspiration in the freedom, bravery and liberty of The New York School artists. Expressionists of the 1940s and 50s such as Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and Helen Frankenthaler incite confidence in her use of paint. She also draws reference from the beautifully energised artistry of Gillian Ayres and Peter Lanyon. Contemporary artists such as Cecily Brown and Rose...
