Julia Contacessi
"The Vanishing, " Abstract Painting

2019

About the Item

This abstract painting by Julia Contacessi features a cool greyscale palette and minimalistic composition. The artist describes this piece, saying, "Bathed in a warm neutral color palette, the use of a strong horizon is the compositional anchor that fades into the distance." The painting is made on gallery wrapped canvas, and has clean, metallic silver painted sides. It is signed and dated on the back of the piece, and is wired and ready to hang. In 2000, Julia earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in New York City. Over the years, her eye for composition coupled with her love of painting, design and photography has earned Julia numerous awards in such publications as Photographer's Forum and Creativity along with inclusion into the Yale Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library Special Collections(ALSC) in New Haven, CT. Julia never strayed far from texture, paint and the mixing and layering of mediums, which are important components to Julia's work. In fact, Julia's most recent abstracts focus on deconstructing painted color palette studies through isolated images, and then rebuilding those studies with new form and composition. About her work, Julia says, "When you layer on the paint just right, so that it dances across a wash of another color, a new level of dimension is created. Combine that dimension with the exploration of color and I’ve just begun to captured something meaningful. My style is single-minded and focused on the simplicity of beauty in the moment. My goal is to drown out the noise and clutter to find a sense of calm through light. The end result is clean, fresh and modern." Based in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Julia spends most weekends tackling new projects and getting into all sorts of adventures with her little guy, Neo. She loves painting & photography, the occasional 5-mile run and feisty discussions across the family dinner table on Sunday evenings. "Today I Choose Palette Knives III, " Contemporary Abstract Painting
By Teodora Guererra
Located in Westport, CT
This contemporary abstract painting by Teodora Guererra is made with acrylic paint on gallery wrapped canvas. It features a neutral, metallic palette with charcoal and light grey, white, and metallic gold. The paint is applied in broad strokes that move out from the center of the composition with an energetic burst toward the edges of the piece. The painting is wired and ready to hang. Teodora Guererra’s abstract artistic vision has evolved throughout her years spent painting and teaching in Fairfield County, Connecticut; Tucson, Arizona, and upstate New York. Arizona’s naturally radiant landscape and arid climate led her to experiment with rich under-painting and vivid color; while the shifting seasons of the East Coast inspired Guererra to pursue dripping and staining techniques. Her focus has always been pushing the limits through experimentation with new materials. “As an artist, painting can be tormenting and sublime at the same time," the artist says of her work. "I'm a big risk taker, experimenting with different materials to layer, stain and saturate color on large canvases. My most successful work looks as if it happened all at once. It sometimes takes 7 or more paintings to produce a successful one and then it's a beautiful thing." Guererra received her undergraduate and graduate Art degrees from Southern Connecticut University, The College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College. Guererra’s paintings can be found in public and private collections across the U.S., including the Allmen Health and Wellness Center for Women in New York and SUNY Brockport, NY, William & Sonoma, San Francisco, CA. Her influences are Pat Steir, John McCracken, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Jud, Bernar Venet, Agnes Martin and Brian...
