Wide Open-original abstract geometrical acrylic painting- contemporary artwork

About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. This captivating original abstract painting, "Wide Open", by Kevin Cross, is a thoughtful exploration of contemporary geometrical abstraction, rendered in acrylic on canvas. The piece immediately draws the eye with its understated elegance, relying on the simplicity of its forms and the depth of its muted blue palette to create an immersive experience. The artist’s careful use of gradients gives the work a sense of calm movement, where each hue transitions smoothly to the next, evoking a quiet emotional resonance that builds with each glance. At the core of this composition are rectangular shapes, but unlike rigid geometric patterns, the corners here are softened, blurring the boundaries between structure and organic form. This subtle detail allows the viewer to feel a sense of openness, as if the edges of the painting extend beyond the frame, inviting contemplation. There is a gentle tension between the shapes that feels meticulously balanced—structured yet free-flowing. The muted blue tones dominate the canvas, but within them lies a surprising depth. The varying shades—ranging from deep, almost stormy blues to lighter, airy tones—create a gradient that feels almost alive. These colors seem to breathe across the canvas, evoking a sense of vast, open space, like looking at a wide, cloudless sky or the endless horizon of the ocean. Cross masterfully uses these gradients to shape not only the forms but also the atmosphere of the piece, creating a mood that is both reflective and expansive. This piece seems to tell a story through its subtle shifts in tone, inviting the viewer to engage emotionally, to get lost in the flow of colors and shapes. It evokes feelings of calm, openness, and the sensation of endless possibility. As one moves closer, the delicate transitions between the muted blues become more apparent, creating a rich visual texture that is mesmerizing and soothing. Signed by Kevin Cross, this contemporary abstract painting is ready to be displayed and appreciated. Whether as a focal point in a gallery or a contemplative addition to a personal collection, "Wide Open" is poised to resonate deeply with its audience. The artwork is currently available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art, Chelsea, as well as through their online gallery, inviting collectors and admirers alike to bring this serene vision into their space. Artist Biography: Kevin Cross is a self-taught Irish Contemporary Artist based in New York City. Born and raised in Limerick, Ireland, he relocated to New York City in 2006, where he began to develop his art practice. His work has been exhibited nationally and is held in private collections both in the U.S. and abroad. In his artistic practice, Cross is captivated by the power of colour gradients to evoke emotion and create mood. Each hue flows seamlessly into the next, forming a visual language that speaks to the complexity of human experience. Through delicate, harmonious colour interactions and the juxtaposition of hard edges with soft gradients, he transforms the canvas into a vivid landscape of feelings, inviting viewers to embark on a personal journey through his work. Central to Cross’s creative process is the relationship between the viewer and the painting. He believes that each observer brings a unique perspective, background, and emotional history, allowing the artwork to resonate on multiple levels. His aim is to create an immersive experience where viewers not only see the colors but also feel their vibrancy and depth. By harnessing the dynamic nature of colour gradients, Cross explores themes of transition, transformation, and the quest for balance, mirroring the flux of our internal landscapes. The smooth blending of tones serves as a metaphor for life’s ever-changing emotions. As viewers immerse themselves in the layers of color, he hopes they find solace and a sense of belonging, creating a shared space of understanding and reflection. Each piece invites viewers to experience the vibrant interplay of colour and emotion that defines his artistic practice. “Through my art, I aim to capture the essence of the pursuit for equilibrium. Some days, the creative process feels effortless, with colors blending seamlessly, reminiscent of the moments of joy that punctuate life in vibrant New York City. On other days, the struggle is palpable; the canvas can feel resistant, making each decision an uphill battle. These contrasting experiences deeply inform my work, resonating with viewers and reflecting the highs and lows of our shared human experience..”- Kevin Cross

EQUIVALENCE 95 - Acrylic on Linen - Purple, Orange Abstract Geometric Painting
By Linda King Ferguson
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting by Linda King Ferguson is part of her equivalence series, which began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. The diamond shaped canvas is primarily a brown cardboard color, with two circles dominating the center of the composition. Stacked vertically, the topmost circle is a light lavender color, and the lower circle is a creamy, salmon orange. Two cuts have been made in the canvas on either side of the center, where the edges of the two circles meet. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting...
