About the Item
Kurt Herrmann creates both figurative and abstract work, but above all he is a colorist at heart. He intends for his paintings to radiate across the room but to also whisper quietly beside the viewer, with big sound and silence. His shapes, forms, and colors have been extracted from his own surroundings and memories, but also from places he’s always dreamed to see. Sometimes included in his paintings are tree trunks, winter skies, deer legs, the bright pink from a watermelon and Greek islands. “The colors, silence, space, seasons, landscape, even the rednecks impact everything I make. It’s inescapable.” Herrmann was born in and resides in the mountains of Lock Haven, PA and obtained a BFA from Lock Haven University. He has exhibited around the world, and most recently at Scope Miami Beach, FL; Penny Contemporary, AU; The Other Art Fair, AU, 12 Gallery, NZ. He has also exhibited at Sidewinder Gallery, IL, which was featured in Time Out Chicago and at James Oliver Gallery, PA, featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Of this series, Herrmann says,
"I’ve been making watercolors since I first traveled to Siberia as a student in 1994. That trip changed my life, and sent me home with my first serious body of work. I’m continuously drawn back to the watercolors because of their spontaneity, immediacy, and fragility. When the Coronavirus pandemic began to seriously sink in I found my concentration in the studio shortening and veering off track. I decided to carve out a part of each day to paint watercolors outside. Because watercolors are so delicate, and the margin between good and horrible so thin, I’m forced to be extremely present in the moment. Being stationery and painting in the middle of the woods for a couple hours each day has almost been a kind of elixir. It’s also spring here in the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania, and the thaw and rebirth of the forest and all the creatures within it has injected a much needed dose of color and life. These paintings are improvisations on the landscape around me, but also what is brimming within."

Kurt Herrmann
Kurt Herrmann is a painter from the mountains of Pennsylvania who does both figurative and abstract work, but above all he is a colorist at heart. Although his exhibition schedule is increasingly international, Herrmann’s rural Pennsylvania roots continue to influence his work. “I’m very aware of the fact that even if a painting was initially inspired by something exotic, or an extremely personal event on the other side of the planet, all my work is filtered through my studio in the hills of Appalachia,” he explains. “The colors, silence, space, seasons, landscape, even the rednecks impact everything I make. It’s inescapable.”
