About the Item
Larry Zox (1937-2006) was a central figure in the evolution of American abstraction. He played an essential role in the emergence of Color Field during the 1960s and 1970s, eventually evolving into the Lyrical Abstraction movement alongside Larry Poons, Pat Lipsky, and John Hoyland, among others.
Raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Zox studied at the University of Oklahoma and went on to work under the tutelage of modernist Georg Grosz at the Des Moines Art Centre. Zox later moved to New York City and established his reputation by the mid-1960's, showing his geometric paintings in several prestigious galleries. His studio was located on 20th Street and he was surrounded and inspired by a melting pot of jazz musicians, artists, bikers, and boxers. In the 1970's his aesthetic softened as he transitioned away from hard-edge abstraction to something more gentle and layered.
The negative space of "Red Range" is quite charged by it's framing forms--With a skillfully arranged composition, Zox encourages a dynamic viewing experience. While engaging with his work, it's nearly impossible to keep your eyes fixated on just one area or element. Similar to Sam Francis, Zox plays with negative space to create a portal of sorts.
In some areas of the canvas, the central negative space mingles with the ribbons of carefully applied colour, both disrupting and reinforcing the structure. Because Zox applied paint directly onto unprimed canvas, some of the pigments subtly bleed into each other, adding to the charged dynamic of the work and encouraging further contemplation.
Larry Zox had a retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 1973. Today, numerous museums including the Whitney, The Hirshhorn, The MoMA, the Tate Modern and the Metropolitan hold his work in their collections.

Larry Zox
Larry Zox was one of the principal representatives of the generation of young painters following the era of the Abstract Expressionists. He is best known for his exuberant geometric abstractions. Many classified him as an Abstract artist, but he considered himself to be a Colorist, which made a strong contribution to the Color Field movement of the 1960s. Zox utilized geometric forms in a mechanistic format and fewer contrasting colors in a design that is based upon improvisation. His works conform to the modern idea that art must be done with fluidity, acceleration and rapidity of execution.

Dan Christensen (1942-2007) is widely recognized as one of America’s foremost abstract artist. Over the course his lengthy career, Christensen was devoted to exploring and expanding the constantly shifting aesthetics of 20th century abstraction.
Christensen established his reputation at the end of the 1960s, by using spray guns to create colorful stacks, loops, and lines in his artworks. This body of work was considered by the legendary art critic Clement Greenberg among the most original abstract paintings of the decade.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who dedicated themselves to a signature style, Christensen was unrelentingly curious and allowed his dynamic version of abstraction to evolve as he tried new techniques and varied his aesthetic.
