Painting for Togolese artist Olympio is fearlessly following an instinct. Olympio’s work is honest and palpable: exposed, raw, and direct. His work is an unfiltered manifestation of his soul. Bright, energetic marks encircle rough textures balanced by the peaceful compositions emanating from below the surface. This 30-inch square mixed-media painting is signed by Olympio on the back of the canvas. The many layers in his work further emphasize the texture and visceral nature of his canvases. Olympio was born into a large family of eight children in Lomé, Togo, West Africa. He began his creating art by using building scraps to make sculptures. By the time he was in high school, he started to experiment with mixed media and collage. He later transitioned to acrylic and oil on canvas. In 2001, Olympio left his home in Africa to live in Paris. Olympio moved to the United States in 2003 and has continued to paint. His work has been exhibited at Art Basel Miami, where in 2018 he was ranked one of the Top 10 Artists by Red Dot Miami. He was also recently interviewed for France 2, TV5Monde, and the BBC. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally. The organic aesthetic and textures of Peter Kuttner’s original boho minimalist artworks are the result of patient layering and original uses of media. Through a combination of paint and collage, Kuttner is able to find personal expression in the clear colors and contrasting soft textures he creates. With a focus on subtle textures, Kuttner separately creates the colorful detailed top layers of each artwork in a separate process. Each of these applied mini paintings within the larger composition is a unique cutout of paint created with a flow of colors on an intermediary glass surface. This one-of-a-kind mixed media painting measures 40 inches high by 60 inches wide. It is wired and ready to hang. It is signed by the artist on the front and back. JENNY DAY is a painter who lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She earned an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Arizona, a BFA in Painting from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz. Her exhibition record most recently includes the Phoenix Art Museum, Blue Star Art Museum, in San Antonio, TX, Arte Laguna in Venice, Italy, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Korea, and Elmhurst Museum in Chicago, IL. Day's work has been supported by an Elizabeth Greenshields Grant in 2018, Contemporary Forum Artist Grant from the Phoenix Art Museum in 2017, a Barron Purchase Award in 2016 and through participation at the Ucross Foundation, the Jentel Foundation, Playa Foundation For The Arts, Kimmel Harding Nelson Art Center, and the Armory Art Center.
